Dear Lorelle, In the 1891 census, I found a Mary Campbell, age 64, born in Edinburgh, Scotland. She was living with a married daughter, Jane Sly, and her family at 1 Underwood Place, Shoreditch, London. Mary was widowed and employed as a starcher (wash). The reference is Civil parish: Shoreditch Ecclesiastical parish: Hoxton St Mary County: London Source information: RG12/245 Registration district: Shoreditch Sub registration district: Hoxton New Town ED, institution, or vessel: 8 Folio: 72 Page: 47. There were four 37-year-old John Campbells born in Scotland in the 1891 census. The most likely one was among the crew of the SS Lammermoor, anchored at Blyth, Earsden Parish, Northumberland. He was married, the first engineer and born in Greenock, Scotland. The Lammermoor was ship No.98281, a steam ship of 1925 tons engaged in foreign trade. Its home port was South Sheilas(?) which it had left on April 1, 1891. The chief officer was Isaac Mann. I was not able to find a comparable Mary and John Campbell in the 1871 census. This description comes straight from the commercial website (A******y)!) where the index is available online: Pallot's Index to Marriages is essential for researchers with London ancestry, as it covers all but two of the 103 parishes in the old City of London. The dates span the time from 1780 to the onset of General Registration in 1837. The more than 1.7 million marriage entries come mainly from London and Middlesex, but also include entries from 2500 parishes in 38 counties outside of London--many not available in other sources. Also included are several records from counties in Wales. With indexing beginning in 1813, several of the registers transcribed in Pallot's index no longer exist, having been destroyed or lost. The index slips were handwritten on paper slips, and indexing continued regularly over a period of more than 150 years. Each slip identifies the church or chapel in which the marriage was celebrated, the names of bride and of groom, whether spinster, bachelor, widow or widower and sometimes other details along with the date of the event. The original paper slips of the Pallot Index are owned and held at The Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies, Canterbury, Kent, England. The Institute may have access to fuller details which may have survived among the original parish records. (www.ihgs.ac.uk) The Institute is a not-for-profit educational organization and researches in the records themselves can be arranged. Please visit their website for additional information about the services they provide. Estelle

HELP NEEDED PLEASE. My direct ancestor, Elizabeth FULLER born about 1789 in Cambridgeshire somewhere, married 1814 in Elsworth, Cambs. to Walter WILKINS. He was born c.1790 possibly Conington.. They had 12 children. ** Where was Elizabeth born & who are her parents? I have been through the parish records for Conington & couldn't find her or Walter. Perhaps Elizabeth was from Elsworth where she & Walter married..I have recorded that Elizabeth was aged 42 when buried 2.8.1831 Conington. Any suggestions gratefully received. Regards, Jan Pfeifer in Australia.
Thank you Honor.. ~~Denise~~ Australia
Hi List - I'm back again I owe very many thanks to Nikki, who painstakingly hunted for my missing WILLSON/SMITH marriage. We think it has been found in Saint Ives in June 1862. In my ignorance I thought St Ives was in Cornwall :<)) While waiting for the certificate to wend its way to the Antipodes, it crossed my mind that Thomas WILLSON and/or Mary Ann SMITH might be found in Saint Ives in the 1861 census. I have no idea if this is an impossible task to ask anyone, but if someone is trawling through St Ives and comes across either of these people I'd be ecstatic to have the details. Thomas would have been around 20 I think, so I guess Mary Ann would have been around the same age. Oh joy, a major brick wall might be about to crumble !!!!!! Gail in NZ

Yorkshire he m. Francis PICKERING and they had John c..1731...Richard c1726..Mary c1737...Ann c. (?)...William c. 1728 I have been trying to bang down this brickwall for almost a year. Hello listers, Is there anyone else searching for the name GILSON? I am at a loss. I have got back to Richard GILSON buried 1744 at Brotherton Yorkshire and cannot find where or when he was born. I was told that there are a lot of GILSON surnames in Cambridgeshire.....maybe he came from there. I have searched everywhere for his birth but I think maybe he was from another county...not Yorkshire. If anyone can help me with any information I would really appreciate it. ~~ Denise ~~~ Australia.

Hi Denise, You are right about there being a lot of Gilsons in the Cambridgeshire area, mine came from the adjacent county, Huntingdonshire and go back to John, born in the early 1700's. Unfortunately the name Richard does not figure very prominently in my records so i'm unable to help at the moment. Good luck with the search. I think it is nothing much apart from nice sea - fish - can't swim in it, tropical nasties would abound. There is now apparently a small hospital / medical centre (I think for day surgery things, otherwise off to Cairns) and a smallish supermarket, and the odd other shop. Mostly people drink, apparently! So there is at least one pub. Wonder if they came to Oz, didn't like it - and were on the way to or from when Mum went into labour at Thurs Island? There are the native people of course. But.. usually they went round the bottom of it, I think, following the "roaring forties". I don't suppose it is a misprint? Maybe you could chase the birth cert - from Qld probably, sorry don't know the address but they are NOT on line apart from perhaps an email address. If you put Queensland BDM or similar into google you should get something with the street address, anyway. Good luck ! In case anyone else was interested when I was searching for info on this family and also on Whittlesey (Cambs), I have now found John and Polly in the 1891 Census as well, aged 29 and 30. . "Polly" turned out to be "Mary E", and was born at Ramsay. They werel at Whittlesey,(still there in 1901) with other children I had not known of....Eliza (7) William (2) and Kate (1). .No Rose though! She should have been about 12, as she was 22 in the 1901 Census where she appeared as a Pork Butcher shop owner at Grimsby, Lincs. My mother said this family went to Canada, perhaps around 1910.
