I agree with you that it may be badly transcribed, but what I was saying was that there was a war plus there other as many other reasons why they were not at home or where we think they would have been such working away, not wanting to be on the census (I mean that happens even today) ill in hospital the list is long, plus we just not looking in the right place lol Regards Janice ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Rouse" <cambs@timewarp.demon.co.uk> To: <ENG-CAMBRIDGESHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 03, 2004 8:15 PM Subject: [ENG-CAMB] Re: : Why they are not on 1901 census > In message <011801c460de$a5e0dd00$db646b51@patriot>, Janice Aitkens1 > <janice.aitkens1@ntlworld.com> writes > >Hello > >I got this on another list & thought it may be why we don't always find the > >men we looking for. > > > >At the time of the 1901 Census, a lot of men were in the armed forces, > >serving in South Africa in the Boer War > > A simpler solution is that they were badly transcribed. Question: When I was in the service: I filled out a Census form where I was stationed. Did they do that for the military in 1901? One would think that they needed to count the military for representation purposes. Regards, Lance
The problem about finding the men and boys that serviced in the Boer War, where is a consolidated roster of the units that were involved. Still, at the same time, men of military age could have been serving anywhere in the World. India for one comes to mind. Regards, Lance L. Piatt (Bremerton, Washington)
This may pertain to one of "mine". I have not been able to find any listing of those that did serve in the Boer War. Has anyone knowledge of such a site? Hello I got this on another list & thought it may be why we don't always find the men we looking for. At the time of the 1901 Census, a lot of men were in the armed forces, serving in South Africa in the Boer War Regards Janice

ELIZA BROWN and husband JAMES MANSFIELD emigrated to Tasmania in 1852/1853. JOHN his wife MARY & brother ISAAC with wife SARAH CADMAN were sponsored out by ELIZA MANSFIELD (BROWN) in 1854. ELIJAH & brother JOSEPH were convicted of "Maliciously wounding with intent to harm" and transported in 1844 to Norfolk Island on the "Agincourt". Later transferred to Tasmania on the "Lady Franklin" in 1846. A WILLIAM BROWN is mentioned as the victim, a constable, whose eye was cut. JOSEPH's wife in Isleham was SUSAN WEBBER. Is anyone interested in corresponding about the BOUTLE family who lived in the area of REACH. in the 1700's. In particular, the family and parents of FRANCIS BOUTLE & MARIAH SARGENT married 1805 at Burwell, whose daughter SUSAN married JAMES MANSFIELD at Swaffham Prior in 1826. Wynnette Ford in Australia.
Any researchers of the MANSFIELD family out there? Can anyone give me absolute verification of the line of this STEPHEN MAN(S)FIELD. STEPHEN MANSFIELD married ELIZABETH WATSON at St Cyriac & St Mary, Swaffham Prior on 17 November, 1789. Paul Chapman has kindly given me information directly from the parish records that a Stephen, almost certainly mine, whose parents are WILLIAM MANSFIELD & ALICE NEWMAN, and he was baptised on 15 May 1774, at possible age 8, given the death information below. Stephen died in 1836 at given age 70 and was buried at St Mary's Swaffham Bulbeck. HOWEVER, we had tagged him as a "possible" descendant of John Mansfield & Jane Wetherhell/Wetherall because he had a WILLIAM WETHERALL as a witness at his wedding. This was also due to lack of easy access to the original copies of Swaffham Prior Parish Records, here in Australia. ALSO, another connecting tag, the NEWMAN family married into our family in 1859 at Burwell. Wynnette Ford, formerly Blanchard, nee Mansfield Formerly of Tasmania, now of Queensland, Australia.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my request for help with the name Ampillas. I'm afraid that Ann Phillis wins hands down against Spanish Blisters or Amarillis. The census information would indicate that! However, the thought of a child called Blisters was entertaining. Regards, Heatha

A good friend passed this on to me:- Posted from another site: "In order to add to the service that we already provide to the genealogical community, FreeBMD has today made its scanned images of the GRO index (previously available only to transcribers) available to the general public. Prior to this move, viewing the indexes was only possible at libraries or on pay-per-view internet sites. Whilst FreeBMD doesn't yet have a complete set of images, the nearly 700,000 images that we do have represent a good proportion of the indexes from 1837 to 1910, and we hope that people will find the facility useful. The initial interface is somewhat crude, but further enhancements to this new area of the site are planned, and we will announce them as they happen." http://images.freebmd..org.uk/cgi/choose.pl I just tried this and the images look good - and they are FREE. 1837 to 1910 only.
