    3. I am looking for the 1851-1861 census for the Leach family I think possibly in Mildenhall. The family saying is that is where they were from. My ggrandmother was born in St. Giles Cambridge. I wonder if they left there as they weren't there in 1851. George Leach born 1825 Frances 1826 Robert 1828 John 1832 Susanne 1832 Mary Ann 1836 Victoria 1838 Ann (me G Grandma). 1843 Marianne

    3. My interest in the WALE family of Little Shelford is academic rather than familial. After recording facts for many years about the village which my family came, I decided to write a biography of Sir Charles WALE KCB for my Doctorial thesis. The WALE family were prominent land owners in the area around the village from the late 17th century, having come from Barfield in Essex. Breaking the family tradition, Sir Charles joined the army in 1779 (possibly at the age of 14), the family previously having been merchants in Riga, Russia. He went on to be responsible for taking Guadeloupe for the British during the Napoleonic Wars and was made governor of Martinique as a reward. He was governor there when the island was returned to the French for the final time. There are many monuments to the WALE family in the parish church in Little Shelford. I would love to hear from anyone who has any of the WALE family or their offshoots (POWELL, WILLIS, PEMBERTON, FFOLKES, WHATELEY, WEST, PREST, DILL, LAWRENCE) in their database. 3. Hi Colin: I too have seen MUNNs and NUNNs in the same parish registers - i.e. around Wisbech and have sounded out both names to see if they could be the same (well, of course they could) - no proof but they are in the same villages apparently. Maybe one part of the family decided they liked MUNN better than NUNN (NONE). Carol

    3. Hi, regarding the likelihood of Munns and Nunns being related - although one can never rule out transcription errors, it is not convincing, however there is a curious connection. Munns and Moons are descended from someone with the Norman nickname of Moun 'monk' - either for their priest-like bearing or ironically because of their rip-roaring lifestyle. Nunns come from the del Nunnes or atte Nunnes (i.e., worker at the Nunnery). If both names occur frequently within a locality I would look for an ancient ecclesiastical establishment with both a friary and a nunnery connected. Other surnames of the similar derivation are Abbott, Cannons, Deanes, Frears (friars), Parsons, Preshouse (priesthouse), Prior, Vickers - all originally servants to a religious person or place. 2. Hey, Robyn, Saw your e-mail and noticed you were connected to the WILLIS clan. My great-grandmother was Martha Jean WILLIS (1858-1914). She descends from a Thomas WILLIS, b. ca. 1734, d. before 8 February, 1794, in Rowan County, North Carolina, USA. I don't know his birthplace; it may've been North Carolina, Virginia, or England. Does that date and name fit with any of your data? Would love to hear from a 'Strine' cousin. Bob Cook, Florida, USA << GreystokeB@aol.com >>
