    3. Hi All: Checking again in the book SCOTTISH HAZARD The Flemish Nobility and their impact on Scotland by Beryl Platts, I came across this paragraph: "Of the churches built by Flemings in the river valleys of Great Ouse, Nene and Welland, the overwhelming number, those started in the years after 1066, are dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin. This was presumably to honour the famous mother church of the Boulonnais, the cathedral of Our Lady of Boulogne, founded to commemorate that image of the Madonna and Child which had miraculously sailed into the harbour on a ship without a pilot or crew, in the year 636. The statue and its shrine thereafter became one of the greatest points of pilgrimmage in Europe." I wonder if Walloons and Huguenots worshipped in those churches after they left the French chapels. 1. Hawkins 1861 census
    2. Mary Woollaston
    3. Hello everyone, Can anyone help me with finding my gr-grandfather on the 1861 census? His name is James HAWKINS born Dec 1844 in Thorney. He is on the 1851 census age 6 living with his parents Robert and Mary in West Fen, March. By 1876 he had emmigrated to New Zealand and was employed with NZ Railways. I am assuming he would have been working by 1861 and am very keen to find him on that census. Family anecdotal information is that 'he came out from Nth Hampton (or Nth Hamptonshire) to work on the railways here.' But I have no evidence of the North Hamptonshire association. I would be very grateful for any help. Best wishes, Mary, Lower Hutt, NZ Researching HAWKINS, FODEN, WOOLLASTON

    1. Re: [ENG-CAMB] My Interests
    2. John, I have a Webb line in Cambridge. It's not much but here it is: Elizabeth Webb born about 1774. She married William Japes, born 1775, Impington, Cambridgeshire. The marriage took place on 5 Jan. 1797 at St. Mary Le Strand, Westminster, London. They raised their family in Stow Cum Quy, Cambridgeshire. I have been unable to determine the parent's of Elizabeth. I'm assuming she is from Cambridgeshire but I'm not sure what town, Quy, Impington or thereabouts. Elizabeth died on 22 May 1841 Stow Cum Quy. Can you make a connection to my Webb? 3. Does anyone have access to the 1851 census for Caxton? I am looking for my 2x gt grandfather Edward MUNNS who was a shoemaker, born in 1823 in Holywell Huntingdonshire. I have seen on an 1851 census index for Cambridgeshire that there was an Edward Munns recorded in Caxton. and I would much appreciate the details of that entry to see if he is 'mine'. If anyone can help me in this I would most grateful. Many thanks Colin Baldwin (in Manchester)

Please update your bookmarks/favourites to read http://ukschoolshistory.org.uk As always I would love to hear from anyone whose school isn't listed on the site or who has school photographs of buildings or pupils that they would like to share. The number of entries on the site has now increased to almost 2300 and I would love to see this increase even more. Many more transcriptions of log books and attendance registers are now also underway and I am always looking for volunteers to help with this. Best wishes Kim Bewick http://ukschoolshistory.org.uk

    2. Evan & Donna Brown
    3. Hi List Does anyone have a connection with Edward BULL who is listed on the IGI as having married Ann AMBROSE 07 October, 1806 at Willingham By St. Ives, Cambridge, England? The record states he would have been born abt 1781. I am searching for my gggrandparents who were Edward BULL, a herald painter and his wife, by family rumor, named Ann(e). This is the closest match I have found. Have my great grandparents marriage certificate that states his name. Their daughter Eliza Ann was born in 1832 and married Charles MOSER in 1857. Seems that he was still living at that time but possibly in Whitechapel. There was no address given. I have no idea as to where to go from here. I didn't realize that Bull was such a popular name in England. I have no other information on this family and google doesn't return anything that helps. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks Donna Mayerthorpe, Alberta, Canada

    3. Also there are a couple of Bosinhams (Anne??) in Parsons Drove in 1851 census - another spelling variation I have found, but not tied these definitely in. Maybe cousin, second cousin?? One of them is in the work house.. In one of the census or they died there.. 3. YES you have my gg gran on there - Elizabeth, born 1826. Esther is on sister who came here with her, and Anne came too, sister Frances = Fanny married a J Walker in Elm and came here about 1854. Benjamin was Dad's name and of course there was a son (brother Benjamin, who had a Benjamin.. William is another male name - that was my gg Gran's paternal grandfather (Married Elizabeth Stephenson or Stevenson in Upwell). Sister Ann born 1825 arrve here in 1852 as well, She married Thomas Burrows; my gg gran married James Burrows, and the Burrows boys were brothers from Wheatfield Oxfordshire, parents William and Charlotte nee Slade (she was in Aylesbury, he was bapt Holton Oxfordshire). Caroline is a name that rings a bell and Charles was the yojngest son of the family. Gg gran would hardly have known him I think. Three of the four Bossingham girls who came here died young - well, 35-40ish. Sad. Annie died about 1865 of pertionitis; Eliz died 1870? Of cancer of wombe and ovaries and seemed all alone - no info known = on death cert(ours are MUCH more detailed than yours) even as to marrieage, children etc. My records are in a mess and likely to stasy that way for some time I am afraid. I can give you names and rlationships from memory, and dig out the certs that I have at some time when I can get to them. Upwell? Well my ggg grqndfather Benjamin Bossingham married Mary Watkinson there, and had first child there - then moved to Wisbech (Timber Market, now Norfolk St and I forget which, East or West - but the one closest to the big highway that was a canal at one time, converted about 1960s. Further from the church if I rmember the very short time I spent there in 2000) and had about 4 more, incl my gg gran, then moved to nNew Walsoken and they continued the family. Well I have to go out in a minute.. Now if you want info faster than I can give it, and are willing to spend a little money, the index of Vic BDMs is on line, price 9+9c per page to view index - that is about 40p in £ sterling! And if you want the cert you can order and download immediatley -- cost $17.50 so again, we pay $1 for a bout 39p. Site is.. http://www.dvc.vic.gov.au/bdm.htm though it did have a note saying temprarily unavailable - but it appeared to come up OK when I tested it just now - just the front page though. And, the name Bossingham and similar mispelt variants come up as children;'s names - Christian names - till the last one died in about 1953. so look out for that, too. A dead give away!! Boshington is on a death cert somewhere.. Track it back, and yes he is one of ours. And another died, and the maiden name of mother was given as Bone - all else matches - it is ours, but if was Annie, who died, and Thomas married again - informant was from the new marriage a generation down - not a bad attempt I’d say for something that had probably just been mentioned in passing. Goodnight for now dawn -----Original Message----- From: AlphaAlphaKilo@aol.com [mailto:AlphaAlphaKilo@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, 22 July 2004 4:43 PM To: ENG-CAMBRIDGESHIRE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ENG-CAMB] Bassingham Hi Dawn Thanks for your reply. 3. If anyone has the early census fiche, the index shows there are entries for WESTNOT in both 1786 and 1811 Trumpington. These may answer whether there was another son or if he belongs to another family group. Hopefully SKS has this info. 2. Hi I have posted to this list before with great success. So many kind people have provided me with information. So here I go again asking for help. I have reached a dead end on my Nelson family and am looking for any more information anyone can provide. After my great great Grandfather left Cambridgeshire I have a fairly good handle on him but it is his roots that are proving to be a challenge. What I know: · John Nelson was born 1828 in Croydon cum Clopton · His mother was Biddy Nelson · John had a sister, Kitty, who was born about 1832 · John’s father died sometime between 1831 and 1837 · According to the Speculum Gregis, Biddy Nelson was born in Ireland · According to the 1841 census, Biddy and daughter Kitty were both born in Ireland · Biddy (Bridget Nelson) remarried in 1838 to James Hagger · Her marriage certificate states that her father was Edward Brown · John Nelson joined the 43rd Light Infantry and attested in Newsells What I am trying to discover: · John’s fathers name? · What became of Kitty Nelson? · What became of Biddy Hagger ? · Why did John attest in Newsells? Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can provide Dianne Bray Alberta, Canada
