Hello everyone, Can anyone give me the address for the North Hamptonshire List? I am interested in Ailsworth and Peterborough. I have found one for Northants...would this be an abbreviation of North Hamptonshire? Many thanks, Mary, Lower Hutt NZ Researching HAWKINS, FODEN, WOOLLASTON
Hubert, Banbury is actually in Oxfordshire - if such a "dark blue" place can be mentioned here the home of the "light blues" (Think of the Boat Race!) See http://cookfmly.rootsweb.com/banbury/ for more information. N'hants is an abbreviation for Northamptonshire, Northants is the more commonly accepted form. See Multimap at http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=450000.128705223&Y=250000.890396199&width=500&height=300&gride=445473.128705223&gridn=240696.890396199&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=freegaz&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&zm=1&scale=200000 for the location. You will note that the Northants Border runs just a mile or so to the east of Banbury. A general point to those in the New World; Generally if a place has "shire" (pronounced sheer) it is a County. There are a few exceptions such as Devon, Dorset, Essex, Kent, Norfolk, Middlesex, Suffolk, Surrey, to name a few. The abbreviations such as Cambs for Cambridgeshire came about to save having to write the county name in full for postal purposes. See http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/Regions/England.html for the abbreviated forms of English Counties. This page also lists the changes to county administration of 1965 and 1974 and it's effects. For genealogical purposes the old traditional counties are the ones that are used - thus records for Peterborough are found at Northampton even though post 1974 the City was part of Cambs. John, Thanks for the response. I will save your email for future reference. Rich
Tony, I can access census returns for the South Holland area - Spalding,Holbeach etc but not much further into the County. Whereabouts are you looking? Do you have ages for these brothers. Could they have died? As regards Ellen she married George at St Edwards, Cambridge on 5 August 1816 per IGI. She was a FRANCES. Obviously the entry needs verification but it appears that she was from Saffron Walden Essex and was widowed at the time of her marriage. Her daughter was born there c1806. John, Just a remote possibility that Ellen might have been an older sister or other family member ? If you have access to Lincolnshire records I would appreciate your help concerning Thomas William SCRAFIELD and his brother John William, both of whom were living in Cambridge about 1841, no trace of them subsequently. Could they have returned to Lincs where they had family connections ? Regards, Tony
The list details can be found here: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/ENG/NORTHANTS.html Yes - Northants is the abbreviation. The county name is Northamptonshire - all one word. Hi Tony Thanks for these. Ellen is obviously the wife(verified in 1851) and perhaps Thomas, Samuel and Joseph are sons. The latter two names have been used elsewhere in this family. This request has confirmed for me that this George is the same one as that mentioned in his mother's Will (Ann Woolley, Widow of Market Deeping - should anyone be looking at the archives). As he and Ann appear to have married in 1816 he cannot be the same George Woolley who was producing children in Spalding, Lincs until his wife died in 1818. That was the purpose of the request - to find possible children for this stray branch is icing on the cake! Regards John > John, > Listed under the same reference is Ellen Woolley age 55. Not family history but might interest some of you. Not telling which is my village. A part of a poem by Rupert Brooke: God! I will pack, and take a train, And get me to England once again! For England's the one land, I know, Where men with Splendid Hearts may go; And Cambridgeshire, of all England, The shire for Men who Understand; And of THAT district I prefer The lovely hamlet Grantchester. For Cambridge people rarely smile, Being urban, squat, and packed with guile; And Royston men in the far South Are black and fierce and strange of mouth; At Over they fling oaths at one, And worse than oaths at Trumpington, And Ditton girls are mean and dirty, And there's none in Harston under thirty, And folks in Shelford and those parts Have twisted lips and twisted hearts, And Barton men make Cockney rhymes, And Coton's full of nameless crimes, And things are done you'd not believe At Madingley on Christmas Eve. Strong men have run for miles and miles, When one from Cherry Hinton smiles; Strong men have blanched, and shot their wives, Rather than send them to St. Ives; Strong men have cried like babes, bydam, To hear what happened at Babraham. But Grantchester! ah, Grantchester! There's peace and holy quiet there, Great clouds along pacific skies, And men and women with straight eyes, Lithe children lovelier than a dream, A bosky wood, a slumbrous stream, And little kindly winds that creep Round twilight corners, half asleep. In Grantchester their skins are white; They bathe by day, they bathe by night; The women there do all they ought; The men observe the Rules of Thought. They love the Good; they worship Truth; They laugh uproariously in youth; (And when they get to feeling old, They up and shoot themselves, I'm told)... Cookie I managed to scour the 1861 for Oakington and Longstanton, but they are both devoid of COOK names. Can you let me know if anyone has yet managed Cottenham (the biggest) and if no one has, then I will attempt over the next few days. It would be useful to know where they were on the 1871 census, which would give a starting point. Hi I am looking for sks who could find the following in the 1841 census. George Woolley aged 50 Cambridge St Mary the Great HO107/86/11 8B I suspect that George may have wandered south from Spalding. If he is not alone, could I please have the other members of the household. If he managed to produce family, I have his mother's Will showing him as a carpenter in Cambridge in 1836 and details of his brothers and parents. I am more than willing to undertake any Spalding area look ups in exchange. Regards John R G Bland
Hi Colin, Edward Munns born Hun. Holywell, is shown on the 1851 census in Caxton as a 30 year old apprentice to David Buck Cordwainer, obviously the same trade, could be your man. Ron Birchall.
