    1. Fw: [ENG-CAMB] HODKINS/HODGKINS AND PARR
    2. Phil Goude
    3. Still no one knows of my family in this area. I am trying to trace the father of the brother of my mum whose name was Parr. His name was Francis Verdun Hodkins/Hodgkins Parr. He was born in 1915 in Amptill. I would value some help please. As I have some information of this Parr being a relative of Henry the 8th family. We have searches so far and have a missing link. I have a Joseph Christmas Parr b 1794 d 1884 who married an Anne b 1799, d 1861. I have the details of the Parr family and I know that Catherine Parr married 4 times without children but her brother William may be the source of my family. Please could anyone find me some lead or where I can go to find one. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Phil Goude" <prgdesgn@tpg.com.au> To: <ENG-CAMBRIDGESHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 24, 2004 8:28 PM Subject: [ENG-CAMB] HODKINS/HODGKINS > I am trying to find a man called Verdun Hodkins or Hodgkin born c 1880. 3. Prerogative Court of Canterbury has will indexes on-line and you can order on-line, enter credit card details, and immediately access and print the downloaded will. Wills probated at PPC usually were of people all over England who had property in more than one county, etc. Plus, each archdeaconry had its own probate court, each with several indexes. And some parishes (called peculiars) were in special jurisdictions. After 1858, wills were probated centrally. So there are several places to search. LDS have filmed the indexes to these, plus the wills on film, so it is possible to search these by yourself from the US. Not as easy as getting someone else to do it, but it can be done. And it is satisfying to do the research yourself. 3. Just a thought Brian, but have you considered alternate spellings. Hello listers near and far I am in the process of trying to track down the Minns families tracing their ancestry back to Edward Minns and Susannah Whybrow who married in 1800 in Chesterton. I have come across an entry in the 1881 Census , Occupation Road Chesterton, of William and Caroline Brown and his stepchildren Louis E Minns, Caroline Minns William Minns and Lily May Minns. Looking back on the Camdex for marriages I found a marriage in 1880 for Caroline (Minns, Carter) to William Brown, this would certainly appear to be them. Looking back further on the index there is a marriage for James Minns to Caroline Whiteman in 1867 I am assuming that this too is the Caroline from the 1881 Census. I know I am on dangerous ground but the children were born between 1870 and 1876 which would fit in with both of these marriages. There are many children christened James in the Minns family and I can account for most of their marriages but I can't fit this one in. It is a mystery and I can only assume that their were many second marriages and deaths that I have not found. If anyone has access to the Chesterton parish records for 1867 could they take pity on me and look for further details please. Heartfelt thanks if anyone is able to do this. 1. Maryport Advertiser - 28 April 1882 - An Aged Pauper's Story
    2. Maryport Advertiser - Friday, April 28, 1882 ___________________________________ AN AGED PAUPER'S STORY. It was shortly before Christmas than an aged woman requested that she be sent to the Philadelphia Almshouse as soon as she could from the resolution to become a pauper. Her story was a wondrous one. She was now 68 years old and poverty-stricken. Years ago she was beautiful, was the petted one of many men of renown, and her wealth was reckoned at a quarter of a million. Her name was Mrs. Emma THOMPSON, but she was better known as Emma JACOBS. She came to Philadelphia when only 16 years old, from Lancaster, running away from home to marry a young member of the Legislature. In this she was disappointed, for the heartless man deserted her in a house of low character, whither they had gone on reaching this city. However, she managed to thrive in her questionable mode of living, and through a legacy of $250,000 left to her by one of her admirers she made exceeding display, and acquired a national notoriety. Twenty-five years ago she married the Rev. Thomas THOMPSON, a well-known Baptist Clergyman. The acquaintance was a chance one, but the divine was so struck with her charms that he induced her to change her life, and become a clergyman's wife. They lived happily together for sixteen years. A life of open-handedness had drained the purse, and after the death of her husband Mrs. THOMPSON began to feel the pinching of poverty. In a short time she was without money, and at last she sought the almshouse. _______ Carol
