Would any one have any information on a William Chapman who married Cecilia Chandler in March of 1889 at Chesteron Cambridge. William was a Compositor by trade. Ron , Ontario Canada
Hi Mick I was interested to see your posting on the Huckle name as I am descended from Jane Elizabeth Huckle born 1835 in Great Shelford. I was able to trace the family to a wedding in 1745 in Comberton but no further and I suspect they came from across the border on Bedfordshire via Gamlingay. With referenc to Gene's reply, it may be possible that this Jane was born in Bourn in 1821 and subsequently married William Leet in 1845 and I would be very interested in learning how you get on with your Huckle research. Does anyone have access to the Comberton parish registers? I'm interested in the birth/baptism/parents of a William Huckle in about 1838/9. Not a brickwall - just tying up a loose end! Hi Estelle, I had found out that John had retired to Chatham in about 1867 but was fascinated by the military history you sent me. I had not been able to place the regiment in Ireland although I knew that his wife was Irish. I also knew little of their time in India or Africa. Thanks for the help it is really appreciated. Hi Judy - yes the John Nelson you found in Chatham is indeed my man. He served in the 43rd light infantry having enlisted in Newsells Hertfordshire in about 1847. I am not at all sure what happended to his family but hopefully one day will be able to findout. it is interesting that there was a Catherine Nelson born in Catxton in about 1830 isn't it though I suspect not the one I am looking for. I am wondering however if her father John Nelson might have been an uncle to my John Nelson. I know that my great great grandfather was born Croydon cum clopton in 1828 and that his sister was born about 1832. They were John and Kitty Nelson. Their mother was Biddy Nelson (later Biddy Hagger). What I am trying to uncover is their father's name. Their mother was a Roman Catholic so I am wondering if her children were baptised as Catholics as well and if so was there a church nearby and would there still be records. Also I found Kitty in the 1841 census but do not have access to later census so I was wondering if anyone could look for her on the 1851 or 1861 - I would love to know what became of her. Mary The present building is 1930's mock Tudor and obviously replaced something older - to cope with the Motor Car. Leicester University have relaunched their Historical Directories site and it is much easier to use now! http://www.historicaldirectories.org/ Cambridgeshire does quite well as there are 12 directories running from Pigot's in 1830 to Kelly's in 1916 Great stuff!!!! Paula
It is listed in the 1830 Pigot's Directory so obviously predates that! Hello everyone, I am trying to unravel an 1861 census address and location for my gr-gr-grandfather. It says Whitemoor Drove, North Witchford, March. On my OS map I have located March, White Moor Doles and West Fen. Can anyone give me a location for Whitemoor Drove and North Witchford? Many thanks, Mary, Lower Hutt, New Zealand
Mary Have a look at this site http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ If you put coordinates 538420,298250 in then you'll get an 1889-1891 map centred on Whitemoor Drove You can put the same coordinates into http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ to see where it is on a modern map Paula ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Woollaston" <m.woollaston@xtra.co.nz> To: <ENG-CAMBRIDGESHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 14, 2004 9:06 PM Subject: [ENG-CAMB] Whitemoore Drove > > Hello everyone, > I am trying to unravel an 1861 census address and location for my gr-gr-grandfather. Witchford is in fact near Ely Looking at my OS map(1954) I would imagine it might be one of the drove's off the March to Wisbech road. Somebody more knowledgable might have other ideas!!! Hi Fenella I'm sending you the image from the 1891 census off list. You'll find parents and father in law (useful info re mum's maiden name!) living in Middlesbrough in 1881. Best wishes Viv (in rainy Yorkshire!)
