    3. Robert, I looked in the Alumni Cantabrigienses 1752 - 1900 for Frederick C Phillips. Did he graduate after 1900? The only two possibilities are: Frederick Phillips admitted to Trinity Hall 1897 son of Frederick Esq of Godsill Park Isle of W. and so on. And Frederick John Lakins Phillips son of William etc. The only relevant Phillips in the Oxford Alumni is Frederick, 1847 of Erbistock, Overton. Christ Church matric May 1847 BA 1852. There was also a Frederick Lewis Phillips. Let me know if you would like any further information on these names. Also, let me now if he graduated after 1900. Successful searching, Mary, Lower Hutt, New Zealand. > Jean's father was Frederick C PHILLIPS, who apparently was a lecturer/don at > Cambridge. 3. Hello Mary I really must apologise for not stipulating the dates of interest, and wasting some of your valuable time. Frederick C PHILLIPS was born c1892 and married Hilda L CARBONELL in 1920. I do hope this information helps. Truly very grateful Rob --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). 3. Hubert Indeed, the Reference Library would be the place to start. As this is recent, you are probably likely to only find a death notice together with funeral arrangements, if the next of kin wished to pay for a notice. If one was paid for, it would most likely have appeared in the Peterborough Evening Telegraph which has been microfilmed, and copies should be held at the library http://www.peterborough.gov.uk/subsites/libraries/central.shtml One thing though, you require WERRINGTON - both the street and village, which has now become a suburb of Peterborough, but at that time was separated from the City by a couple of fields at least. The funeral could have therefore taken place at Werrington Church if she was buried or at Peterborough Crematorium. Presumably if you have the burial certificate, you will have the informant's name and will know whether he/she is still alive. As this is within living memory, it might be worth dropping a line to the paper, in case any one remembers her. 3. Hello Listers Having received such an excellent response to my last query, regarding James CRADDOCK and his wife Jean Freda PHILLIPS, I thought I would try my luck once more. Jean's father was Frederick C PHILLIPS, who apparently was a lecturer/don at Cambridge. Is it possible to find out which college, dates etc, and if so where do I begin. As stated previously I live in South Staffs, so local research is very difficult. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If they haven't got them, they will be able to tell you where they are lodged. Orbituaries often give the details of which cemetery was used. 1. Sir Harry Smith Bt of Aliwal (1787-1860)
    2. Ian Mackersey
    3. I am a biographer, currently based in Auckland, New Zealand. My London publisher is interested in a new biography of the famous Whittlesey soldier, Sir Harry Smith, celebrated for his Peninsular War marriage to a 14-year-old Spanish convent girl, Juana Maria Los Dolores de Leon at Badajoz in 1812. The story of their battlefield marriage was the subject of The Spanish Bride, a best-selling romantic 1940 novel by Georgette Heyer - due to be reissued by Random House in June 2005. Harry, christened Henry George Wakelyn Smith, was born in Whittlesey on 28 June 1787, the second son of the local surgeon, John Smith. Harry was one of eleven surviving children. His mother, Eleanor Moore, was the daughter of the local vicar. Joining the British Army around 1804 Harry served with great distinction in South America, the Peninsular War under Sir John Moore and the Duke of Wellington, at Waterloo, in India, America and South Africa. He was made a baronet, became governor of the Cape of Good Hope and rose to the rank of Lieutenant-General. He and his Spanish wife, who died in October 1872, are buried in Whittlesey where a school, a chapel and a local pub, Hero of Aliwal, commemorate him. I am anxious to trace any descendants of Sir Harry, who died in London 12 October 1860. He and Juana produced no children. But some of his brothers did. Their descendants acquired hyphenated family names of which two were Moore-Smith and Ford-Smith. I would specially like to be put in touch with the descendants of Harry's brother, Charles - in particular the family of Mr Leslie Ford-Smith who, in the mid-1970s, had access to Sir Harry's private papers and helped his biographer, Joseph Lehmann. I would eventually like to find their graves, and if I at least know a cemetery in the area it would help. Any help would be much appreciated. Best Regards, Cameron Bryant
