I work near Fair Street, but I'm afraid my camera isn't up to much.<<Estelle Wowee! That must be it! Francis Reveley, a poor young man from Westmorland, was at Cambridge on scholarship. He met a very rich girl. ;-) The old letter below explains it. I ever am my dear friend, Your affectionate Lister, S. Reveley ============================================ Crosby, January 16th, 1823 My Dear Brother, We have finished your four shirts which we were intending to send this week in the trunk with the Bible and some other books, but the day being so very stormy that I think Waller will scarce be able to come, if not you'll receive this by the post and we must send the bundle next week. My Mother has at last received a letter from Frank in which he makes a great many apologies for not writing sooner and begs her forgiveness. He tells us the lady he has married is a native of Chatham, the niece of a gentleman of considerable property by whom she has been educated, and at whose death she will be entitled to something handsome, altho at present he is rather in the huff they having married without his knowledge or consent. He says he has the offer of a curacy in May, but he is in doubt whether to accept it, he has been strongly solicited to begin school at Chatham but has not the means at present. We have not sent the letter so we have it to answer this week and you can see it when you come, he is not in the same lodgings. We wrote to George a fortnight since and expect to hear from him on Saturday. We should be very glad if you would send in another volume of the bible when you meet with a favourable opportunity. I ever am my dear brother, Your affectionate sister, E. Reveley

    3. Sarah http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/d.asp has a number of directories for Cambridge. On page 103 of the 1830-1831 Pigot's Directory for Cambridgeshire under 'Academies, seminaries and public schools' is the entry for the Free Grammar School in Free School Lane with James BAILEY MA headmaster and Francis REVELEY BA undermaster. On page 18 of the Cambridgeshire section of the 1839 Robson's Commercial Directory of Beds, Bucks, etc under 'Public Charities & Schools' is the entry for Perse's Free Grammar School with Peter MASON as headmaster and Geo. BARBER as usher. A quick check of the school's prosectus shows that Perse's Free Grammar School was to be found in Free School Lane in until 1890 or so - so these 2 places are one and the same which fits in with Estelle's idea!!!
