Hi Robert I too have heard what a tough time the apprentices had! My mother, who has lived in England most of her married life, was born & brought up in Chantilly, as were her parents, grandparents etc for over 100 years. Her grandfather was Elijah Cunnington, a relation of Tom Jennings, (the English all seemed to inter marry out there!) and he was also an accomplished trainer. If I can help you with any information about the life in Chantilly I am more than happy to do so. If is not too much to ask, would it be possible to send me a copy of the articles your grandfather wrote in the Sporting Chronicle - I would be most interested? I will of course reimburse you for any expenses. Kind regards Carolyn
Hello Carolyn et al, Mr grandfather, Robert Edward Rodrigo, was apprenticed at about 12 years old to Old Tom Jennings at Chantilly. In a series of articles which he wrote for the Sporting Chronicle during the a hard winter of First World War, he mentioned the hard life the would-be jockeys of that time lived. Robert Rodrigo
Hello. I've just joined this list. Am searching for the ancestors of a recently discovered cousin of my Dad's who's in hiw 80's and knows nothing of his family. He lives in Devon; I, in Montreal. Roy's mother was Emily Agnes Chapman, daughter of Tom Dan Chapman. Emily was born in London. Tom Dan and his parents, etc. were from Histon, Impington, Cottenham area. Tom Dan married Alice Brown of Whitechapel. Tom Dan's parents were Thomas Chapman + Eliza Papworth married about 1858. He of Cottenham, she of Impington. Thomas parents were James Chapman + Charlotte ? married early 1830's, I imagine. Cottenham. James' parents were Thomas Chapman and Mary (Molly) ? married 1813 or so. Cottenham. Tom Dan's sister Agnes married George Smith in 1899, and Roy remembers visiting her. William papworth Chapman, brother, married Mary Swain (born Newson) in 1883. She of Plomesgate, I think. Was married and widowed, I think, with a son William. Does anyone have connections with this family? they seem to have been involved off and on, mostly on, with inns, victuallers, as well as carpenters - publicans. Some moved to London. Thank you for any help - looking forward to hearing from you. I love the puzzles - and detective work. Have found so manay new relatives and friends while searching my grandfather macgregor - whose death I found - but no further along - and hope to find news in the 1911 census in 4 years - meantime, having fun with lots of other paths. Cousin Roy (long family story) didn't know he had any relatives. My dad died before he knew he did. Ros

Thanks for the two responses. Janet, I have the 1851 entry but cannot fit it to my data base. I have already applied for the certificate, I was impatient and thought a Parish Register route might be quicker. Karen, I have checked against my data base and cannot find a connection, I will keep the email on file in case something turns up in the future. Thanks again Dave
Dear Listers; Is there anyone on the list who is researching the Sparrow surname? Anne Sparrow married Thomas PEAK in 1731 at Chippenham, but I have not been able to uncover any other information about her. Any help will be appreciated. Best wishes, Julia Henderson
Hi there I have a John Barber born 1848 to William and Hannah Barber nee Golthorpe. John Barber was actually the second son named John to have been born to William and Hannah Barber, the first being born 1847 but he died in 1848 just prior to his brothers birth. My connection to the name Barber is that through a DEWEY connection. John Edward Dewey born 1931 married Pamela Maude Barber. Pamela Barber was the daughter of Ernest Herbert Barber and Maude Yarrow. Ernest Barber was the illegitimate son of Louisa Barber and Flanders Hopkins. Louisa Barber was the daughter of Reuben Barber born 1849 to William and Hannah Barber and was the brother of the John Barber afore mentioned. John Edward Dewey was the son of Ernest Edward Thomas Dewey and Susan Jane Moden. Ernest Edward Thomas Dewey was the son of John Freeman Dewey and Elizabeth Boulter and was born 1896 in Witchford. John Freeman Dewey was the illegitimate son of Sarah Dewey and John Gooby and was born 1856. Sarah Dewey born 1838 was the daughter of William Dewey and Mary Tabraham. William Dewey was born 1815 and was the son of William Dewey and Ellen Markerham. My Dewey line descends from William Dewey born 1815's brother James Dewey born 1817. Hopefully we may make some connection somewhere! Merry Christmas! Hello Listers An 1851 census entry in Graveley is difficult to read. It is of Thomas BUTLER, his wife Mary Ann and family, transcribed as BATHER. One line contains an entry for Mary Ann's sister which I think reads Susan (born Susannah GALE), age 47, wife of a cabinet maker. I cannot read her married name. Can anyone look in Graveley marriage records to see if they can find Susannah getting married? Thanks Dave
Hi Dave I have had a good look at the 1851 census, and I believe the name to be, LOUISA STOREY Warm seasons Greetings Margaret NOTTS. UK
