Greetings: Sometime ago I purchased a copy of a will for Abraham CLEMENTS, Blacksmith and _____ (?) draper of Dullingham, dated 1793, with codicil dated 1813, probate being obtained 14th April 1814. It names his wife, Elizabeth CLEMENTS, and in the event of her predeceasing him, Twenty pounds each is left to his sister Ann OAT, her children William, George, James and Ann OAT. Other beneficiaries include John JEFFERY (brother to Ann OAT, Snr., being the wife of Elizabeth JEFFERY). The writing isn't the easiest to read and apart from Dullingham I can't make out any other place names. As regards OAT, I've seen references on Ancestry.com to an OAKE family that has connections with CLEMENTS, but the Will looks like OAT. If this is of interest to anyone I can send either a scan of the photocopy and/or a copy of the text such as I've been able to make out. I was looking for a Charles CLEMENTS of Dullingham, b. abt 1820 (married to Elizabeth of Hopton, b. abt. 1822) with children: Eliza Maryann Charles Georgina Eleanor and Elizabeth and hoped Abraham might have some connection, but he didn't. Hi I sent the following info to Helen but might be useful to you. There are other Elbourne's marrying in NZ if you are interested. >From my NZ marriage cd (1836 to 1956) there is a marriage for a Edward Elborn to a Mary Roades in 1878 folio 2854. Nothing else listed for Edward kind regards Heather Macdonald NSW Australia
On the site at www.cfhs.org.uk/ I found the following baptism. Note the slight difference in surname spelling. Have you checked this out? Also, remember that in 1841, ages were rounded down to the nearest 5-years. 1815 HILSDEN Jane S. 22d Castle St. d. of Samuel & Susannah Camb. St.Giles * Also found two possible baptisms for John. Note the spelling here of his last name: 1815 RAWLING John F. - ----- illeg. s. of Sarah Upwell * 1813 RAWLING John 17d ----- s. of John & Mary Chatteris * Have you looked them up in the 1851 census? I found them on the index as follows, but do not have access to the details. Perhaps sks could check this as the 1851 census cites where they say they were born: Surname Forenames Age Parish or Town Film Folio RAWLINGS John 45 Chatteris HO107/1765 311B RAWLINGS Jane 47 Chatteris HO107/1765 311B Good luck, Judy -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Thursday, January 11, 2007 12:29 AM To: Cambridgeshire List Subject: [ENG-CAMS] Hillsden/Rawlings families I am a new subscriber and have read through the archives with great interest, especially noting that some of you have connections in Chatteris. Hello Janette Thanks for your email. Thanks to everyone else who has responded, I am trying to follow up as many leads as I can. Janette, I have found the death of an Edward Elborn in Christchurch, New Zealand age 72 years in 1910, Born in England, which would make his birth date about 1838. I am guessing but I have managed to locate an Edward Elborn who lived not far from Martha in London on the 1861 Census. It seems his wife died in 1861 ( I have just sent for the death certificate to see if this can give me any further information). I believe that Martha's first husband was still alive when she ran off with Edward? I have found a possible candidate on the 1881 census for William Partridge and I cannot locate a death certificate for him. It would seem he may well have still been alive when she married for a third time! The Edward Elborn I am chasing up at the moment was born in Cherry Hinton, Cambridgeshire in 1838. Mother Sarah, father unknown (at the moment). I am by no means sure this is the correct Edward Elborn but the dates and locations in London mean they were only a few miles apart. I would definitely be interested in any information you have on an Edward Elborn who was in New Zealand in 1860-70 or if you know if he ever worked or travelled to London. Did he work on the railways? There is a suggestion from family members he may have been a rail worker. Whilst the intentions of those producing the petition might be laudable, the petition itself might have attracted a better chance of success if it had been accurate. The 1931 census was completely destroyed by bombing during WWII so no amount of petitioning can get it released. In respect of the 1911, the National Archives has already announced that it hopes to release that census in early 2009 after the work required digitising it and producing indices [name and address] has been completed. Sensitive information [lunacy etc.] will be withheld until 2012. Given the vast amount of work involved, two years seems very reasonable. And, before anyone asks, there was no census in 1941! So this just leaves the 1921 census out of the three listed in the petition I have sent this reply only to the Cambridgeshire list and not cross posted to the lists of which I am not a member. Islington is a London Borough, but was in the county of Middlesex; Shrewsbury is in the county of Shropshire; Shropshire is a county sometimes also called Salop. Hi, Georgia ! Islington used to be a village just outside London - now it is an inner London suburb ! Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire - in the west of England, near Wales ! Neither of them are anywhere near Cambridgeshire !! GILES On Sunday evening, March 16th, the congregation worshipping in the Parish Church were alarmed by a cry of "Fire". The house lateley occupied by Mr Wm ANDRES and his son, from some hitherto unexplained cause caught fire, and being an old thatched building, was speedily burned to the ground. The house is situate to the east of the church and about 20 yards distant from it. The falmes burst out about 7pm. The startling cry of " Fire" naturally caused a great deal of excitement amongst the large congregation assembled in the Church, and serious consequences might have ensued had it not been for the good common sense shown by alarge number who kept their seats. The men whose services might prove useful and many others at once left the building, and the service was brought to an abrupt termination. Considerable apprehension at one time prevailed lest the flames should be carried across the road, as on a previous occasion 8 years ago, to the buildings and stacks belonging to Mr WILSON, and all means were used to obviate this danger, which fortunately was averted, and the conflagration was confined to the spot where it first broke out.
