    3. I checked the Cambs baptism index at http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Search.html with no success, so wondered if he was still in England in 1851 He was, living in Mile End, London as follows HO107/1553 folio 561A Mile End Old Town Joseph Wilcockson head married 48 Game keeper born Derbyshire Charlotte Wilcockson wife 46 b Cambridgeshire Ann Brown dau widow 24 b Cambridgeshire Edward Wilcockson son unm 18 b North Wales Hannah Wilcockson dau 16 b North Wales Thomas Wilcockson son 10 b Hunts Susan Wilcockson dau 8 b Hunts George Wilcockson son 6 b Hunts William Wilcockson son 4 b London Sarah Wilcockson dau 2 b London I cannot see them in 1861, nor can I find a baptism of Joseph Wilcockson in Derbyshire around 1803 on the IGI (www.familysearch.org). And the baptism is the key to finding his parents. Perhaps a brick or two dislodged but certainly not demolished! Regards David Marion Boyd <[email protected]> a écrit : Hello All, I'm an Aussie newbie to this list and wondering if someone might be able to help me out please. I have a Joseph WILCOCKSON who married on 5 Oct 1826 at Ashley Cambridgeshire to Charlotte HANTON - daughter of Joseph and Mary (nee BONNETT). I would dearly love to know of his parents names and anything about any of these families as this is a brick wall to my line. Look forward to any snippets that you may have to help me out. 3. Looking at different censuses it would seem that Joseph was Rebecca's illegitimate son who was brought up as Joseph GRAY. His wife, Eliza, died in 1849 and in 1851 he was living with his mother-in-law in Whittlesey. So it would appear that he was at the very least a half-brother of Mary Ann GRAY. 1. [ENG-CAMS] GRAY & Smith-ASHWORTH of Whittlesey and/or Cambridge
    2. Diana Lea
    3. I am a returned researcher to this list after many years of being absent. Having just spent a very informative and enjoyable time browsing the list archives, I can see how helpful the people are here, and thought I might ask for some help over something I have wondered about for a while now. ELIZA SMITH ASHWORTH – born in Whittlesey/Whittlesea in 1831 to John Smith Ashworth and Elizabeth Anne Hayes, married a JOSEPH GRAY in Whittlesey, she at the tender age of only 16, in 1847 Brother of Eliza Smith Ashworth (and my 3x gr. grandfather) GEORGE SMITH ASHWORTH married a MARY ANN GRAY in Rotherhithe London 7 years later in 1854. Mary Ann Gray was not from Whittlesey but came from the St. Paul’s Parish of Cambridge. I realize that GRAY is a very common name, but I would love to know if there is any relationship between Joseph Gray and Mary Ann Gray. 99% of my Ashworth family were given a middle name of Smith which has made them easy to research, but the Grays have been a much different story. Mary Ann’s father was also called Joseph Gray, and I have traced him back to having been born in 1803 in Little Abington. He, Joseph Gray, father of Mary Ann, was married to Rebecca Barrow of Steeple Bumpstead and had the following (known) children… Charles b. 1830, Henry b.1831, Mary Ann b. 1832, James b. 1835, Thomas b.1837, Daphney(sic) 1841, William 1943, George 1845. All born in Cambridge! I thought at first that Joseph might have been a brother of Mary Ann, hence George and Mary Ann apparently meeting up and marrying in London (you know, Joseph and Eliza visiting for instance, and bringing Mary Ann with them), but because they married before the 1851 census, he was not at home with his family in Cambridge at that time for me to check, and I have not as yet been able to check the 1841 census. I do not know where he actually came from as I have not found him on a census after the marriage in 1847. Not knowing the date of the marriage of the elder Joseph Gray and Rebecca Barrow I feel it could be more than possible they had a first child named Joseph, but this is only supposition on my behalf. Because I am currently in transit between the Sth Pacific and Australia I cannot join Ancestry to check the census records, but I wondered if maybe one of you super sleuths out there might like to do some sleuthing for me!! :o) Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated. 3. Thanks David and Paula for assisting me in trying to sort out my Catmull problems. It might be me who is causing my own dilemma. I came across the christening of Samuel Catmull 20 Aug 1821 (6 yrs before Wm and Ann Marry?) this is when I went looking for another marriage and found the death of Ann Catmull Church Records, film #1041714 item 4 Toseland. Samuel son of William and ann Catmull Publican. David, my connection to Wm Catmull is through Ann Bradley and then through their eldest son John. I have all the census on Wm and Ann Bradley but how do I explain Samuel who is Christened in Toseland and appears to marry Grace B. Catmull who is the youngest daughter of Wm and Ann Bradley. If that is so then a Catmull married a Catmull but maybe they are cousins of some sort. Samuel is a tailor and moves to Tadcaster YKS and maybe he is the son of a different Wm.and Ann. Samuel says he is from Graveley on some census records and Toseland on some but he is born abt. 1821. Grace is born in Toseland in 1844. I found that on BMD's but once again I find no marriage for Grace and Samuel. I do find that Samuel Catmull married Mary Topham as follows: Church of England, Parish Records, Toseland Film #1040729.CATMULL, Samuel - tailor Spouse: Mary TOPHAM both full age Date: 11 Jul 1843 What do you make of it? I am perplexed! Sharon

    3. Hi Sharon Paula and I have been exchanging thoughts off board, and I don't think either of us can understand how anyone has shown that it was Ann Betts who was William's first wife, if indeed he had a wife before his 1827 marriage. Possibly there was some sort of documentary evidence in Utah after the Catmull emigrated. However on the assumption that he was actually married to her, she was baptised in 1798 as previously advised to you. Her parents were William Betts and Mary Blunsom who married at Buckworth, Hunts on 16 Sept 1794 (on the IGI as an extracted entry so reliable). Hunts Marriage Index adds that William was of the parish of Graveley Cambs. William was baptised on 26 Apr 1766 at Graveley son of Edward and Ann, and he was buried at Graveley on 30 June 1830 age 64 ("William Betts of Huntingdon") Edward Betts married Ann Eversden at Bourn Cambs on 1 Jan 1756 ("Edward of Graveley"). He was baptised at Graveley on 27 Jan 1734, the son of William and Frances (he was their only child who survived to adulthood). William Betts of Boxworth Cambs married Frances Swetman at Huntingdon St Mary & St Benedict on 3 Feb 1726. William was buried at Graveley on 10 Apr 1734. Frances was from Yelling, which forms a triangle of villages with Toseland and Graveley. Hope this helps Regards David Sharon <[email protected]> a écrit : Hi Listers, Is there anyone reading this with ties to the William Catmull family of Graveley, Toseland area? 3. Many thanks for this Paula - I appreciate it greatly!! I'm trying to break through a brick wall - not an easy task. For years I've been looking for information about William Warren Renney and his wife Eliza Moore from whom I am descended. They had four children and used the name Warren as the middle name for their eldest son and their eldest daughter so obviously Warren is a significant name to them. So I decided to move the focus of my searching to William Warren - assuming that for some reason he wanted to take on a new name, perhaps when they came to Australia. My first search attempt found a marriage which you have now confirmed, so maybe I'm on the right track. Previous to this I have not been able to find records of William and Eliza's births, marriage, and would you believe, records of their deaths!! I'm not sure how you hide your death records. Perhaps the records are in the name Warren as well, in South Australia or Victoria. The only records I have are the marriage certificates of their four children and records of the offspring of these marriages. Thanks for the Camdex URL - I had forgotten about it. I'll do some more searching now and see if I can find any children. If anyone on the list has these two in their family lines, I would be very happy to hear from them. 2. David
    3. Hi Paula The bit I don't like about the 1824 marriage is that Ann was a minor. If (and perhaps it's a big IF) it was Ann Betts who married William Catmull and it was her who was buried in 1826 she would have been 26 in 1824, which fits with the 1798 baptism. And there's a marriage of William Catmule to Ann Bradley in Toseland in 1827 (but William is not described as widower in the Marriage Index). It appears that a son of this couple emigrated to Utah, but there is so much garbage, and I use the word carefully, about him on the IGI that it's difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff. Sharon, do you know if William and Ann (Betts) had children? What's your connection to Ann Betts/Catmull? Regards David Paula Patterson <[email protected]> a écrit : Pallot's Marriage Index has these entries: Betts, Ann (minor) s cons Wm B father = Catmull, William Davis (Wavenden co: Bucks) b Lic at St Andrews Holborn 1824 Catmull, William Davis (Wavenden , Co. Bucks) b = Betts, Ann s (Minor) consent of Wm B. father at St Andrews Holborn 1824 Lic The lower case b and s mean bachelor and spinster Lic means By Licence (rather than by banns) Is the marriage you are looking for? Well, it seems rather a coincidence that there's a baptism for a William Betts CATMULL in Wavendon, Bucks on 3 June 1816 with parents David and Ann CATMULL and that this same William Betts CATMULL shows up in the 1851 census as being born in St Neots, Hunts. Incidentally he has with him wife Jane and sons William, Leonard, and James. Now this is the only reference I can find to a David CATMULL so is the father here really William Davis rather than David? And apart from the obvious link there's another link which is the names of William Betts CATMULL's children. William Davis and Ann CATMULL supposedly had a son called Leonard Walter (or Wallace) CATMULL which was not exactly a common name in those days. William and Jane had Leonard Wallace CATMULL in 1849 and James Walter CATMULL in 1850. My money is on the Holborn marriage being the one you are after. Maybe you need someone to check out the whole entry (or even better get the Licence) to see if this is the right couple?
