    3. Hi Paul, Thanks for your reply, WE know that William Pateman was baptised in 1831 at Bisom Bucks. His Parents were John and Jane. Later Charles was baptised in Woodmancote in Hampshire. They have connections with Major Patemans Family in Toddington Beds. WE have not been able to find them on the 1841 CENSUS. Thanks again Regards Dave Pateman . -----Original Message----- From: Paul Irving [mailto:pauljirving@ntlworld.com] Sent: 24 October 2007 21:24 To: eng-buckinghamshire@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ENG-Buck] PATEMAN family Do you have any idea of their ages? It'd help to identify them. Also, the names & ages of any known children & other relatives who might be with them. By roots, do you mean born there? If you know which counties they were born in, it'd also help identify them. So far, none of the 4 adult Janes I've found in the 1841 census seems a good prospect. None is paired with an adult John. There are far more Johns. 3. =Hi Dave, This is probably a long shot but... In my hawker Gypsy families they often used the surname of the mother. For example, in my Gregory family, several of the children were baptised as Gregory (father's name), some as Lee (the mother's surname) and even a couple as Smith (the maternal grandmother's name!). This was not dependent on whether they were married or not. Could it be that your Pateman family could be using the wife's family name in the 1841 census? Best wishes, Jackie
