Hi Graham, This is one of the most common stumbling blocks in family history and there is no easy solution. One could perhaps assume it was the elder William who married first. Does the burial register hold any clues? Although it was not common to add age at death during the 1700's, sometimes these ages are included, although of course they may not be accurate. One way I sorted out a similar problem was to trace the lines of descent of both families (males and females) and discovered that a grandchild had been given his grandmother's surname as a middle name, so I was able to determine which parent was his. Are there any wills which might help? Not a lot to go on I fear, but something might trigger a new line of thought.
