    3. Hi Beverley Thank you so much for this information. Samuel has been a brickwall for a long time as I had been looking for him in the 'wrong' county (berks not bucks). I've just subscribed to Ancestry and so found him and family in Bucks - unfortunately I aslo found him (I think) as an inmate in Aylesbury Gaol, 1878, ocupation Hawker, crime 'cruelty to an ass'! So probably not a forebear to be proud of! 3. Hi Karen, Oh. Please don't be ashamed of your forebear! I too had one in Aylesbury Gaol. His offence was stealing money (3rd offence), and while I was shocked I just know how beautiful the following generations have been. We can only imagine the desperate, hungry times that they lived in then, and what circumstances may have led to their offences. I can picture your Samuel needing the ass to carry his wares door to door. It was probably old and in a sorry state, but all he could afford, when he bought it. And his family depend for their lives on him making his rounds and making his sales, while he tries in vain to get the poor animal to continue. I don't know what cruelty amounted to in those days - whether it had to be awful or not. And believe me, I love animals to the point of the ridiculous - 2 dogs and 1 cat share my husband's and my bed at night! But please be gentle with your Samuel and love him anyway. Know that he was doing the best he could in hard times! All the very best to you, May Lanchbury Perth, Western Australia -----Original Message----- From: Karen Cook [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, 14 November 2004 1:30 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ENG-BUCK] 1871 census Upton with Chalvey - WESTON Hi Beverley Thank you so much for this information.
