    1. Re: [ENG-Buck] Re John Murry of maybe Buckinghamshire
    2. As Jane said, it would not be surprising if his wife was unsure of his birthplace. Bucks could be where he lived before moving to London. I've seen people recorded in censuses as born in the wrong place, but always when they'd not have known themselves (e.g. my great-grandfather, whose mother went home to her mother to have him, her first child), or when the informant was probably an employer or spouse. You can get a marriage certificate for £7 or so from the GRO, online, using the reference from FreeBMD. If it's the right one, of course. They'll post it to you. If you could find children born in the UK before they emigrated, their birth certificates will give any previous names (previous married names, as well as maiden name) of the mother. How disappointing that he couldn't be found though. > > In answer to your queries, I got this birthplace from his death certificate which was included in the Land Selection Filesfor him and his wife from the Queensland State Archives. In this file, I found an application by his wife Mary Ann MURRY to take over the lease of the land upon his death which included the marriage date of 21/7/1850 London. However I haven't had time to confirm that date yet or get the details to order the marriage certificate. > > Queensland Death certificates are great in that they can hold a wealth of information but are only as accurate as information given by the next of kin (besides the main facts of death date, place and medical info) . Strange that his wife states that he was born in Buckinghamshire if he wasn't. She lived until 1911 so I wouldn't think dementia but perhaps she was unsure or perhaps he lived there when he met her!. The QLD death index doesn't give her father's name so her death certificate will unlikely hold any more details for her so I need to find the census record for her to go further back. > > The QLD Death index for 1877 for John MURRY states that his parents are Edward MURRY and Maria BUTLER. I haven't yet had a chance to follow through with immigration records as I only found out last Saturday that they were married in England and most likely would have come to Australia together. > > Thanks again. Look forward to any other information that you may come across.
