    3. British Origins has a few options when searching for names: exact match, "close variants", "all variants", & using wildcards. The "close variants" search is something like the system on the IGI, & returns exact matches, & common alternative spellings or misspellings. "All variants" widens that somewhat. If I recall correctly, on Ancestry you can choose exact matches, or one of the character near-miss systems. I think that's far inferior to the British Origins system. The near-miss Ancestry option produces vast amounts of completely unrelated names. I just tried EMANUEL again: 356 for exact only, 402 for close variants, 414 for all variants. Slightly more in 1861. EMMANUEL got 36/401/413. Paul Hodges wrote: > Hi Paul > > Thanks for that information. 3. Karen, I have a subscription to British Origins, which has the 1841 census online. I think the transcription is more accurate than Ancestry, the search engine seems to work better, & it's much cheaper. Disadvantages are much less census coverage (1841 & 1861 & partial 1871 so far), fewer other records (though it has some that Ancestry does not), & fewer census search options. 3. Thank you Dianne and Paul for your suggestions. This is my husband's family making me new to research in Buckingham. "But one possibility you have to face is that you won't find him in High Wycombe baptisms. Emanuel is an uncommon name (just 402 in the 1841 census, none in Bucks under any spelling), & most seem to have been in Wales & Middlesex. Quite a few of the latter were listed as "Foreign" & not necessarily christian. Aah - an Edward EMANUEL aged 60 in the 1881 census, born "Wycombe". 14 Leete Street, London, Middx. Wife Catherine b Maidenhead. And George had a son Edward. Brother?" Thank you for finding the 1881 Edward Emanuel, Paul and for the additional information on the name not being common. Googling I found a very old forum post with someone listing George Samuel Emanuel baptised in 1824 son of Samuel Emanuel and Fanny?. no further details. I have posted to this other forum hoping the lister is still current. Can you tell me how you were able to find out so much about the emanuel name in the 1841 census? Karen

    2. Hodges
    3. I am looking for the parents of George Samuel EMANUEL born about 1823 at High Wycombe Buckingham England, died 1893 Buckingham. I have been able to find him with his wife Mary Elizabeth Gale in the 1851-1891 census in the parish of Upton Cum Chalvey. 1851 Church St Slough 1861 8 High St 1871 The Limes 1881 High St "The Limes" 1891 High St [now a widower] His occupation was Coachmaker/builder and he employed other men. I haven't been able to find him in the 1841 census which was before his marriage. His wife and all his 15 children were born in the parish of Utpon Cum Chalvey with some listed in the IGI's. His own christening however doesn't appear on the IGI'S . Any help appreciated Karen

    1. Re: [ENG-Buck] Looking for the parents of George Sameul EMANUEL
    2. Karen, his marriage record would give you his fathers name. With the reference from FreeBMD (December 1848 quarter, Eton registration district, volume 6 page 707 show George Samuel Emanuel & Mary Elizabeth Gale) you can get a marriage certificate online directly from the GRO at - http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ If you go to -http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyBuckingham.htm#H - you see that High Wycombe christenings are mostly not in the IGI. But on the Bucks FHS website, here - http://www.bucksfhs.org.uk/index.php?option=com_parish&task=eventsBap - you see that their christenings database covers High Wycombe for that period. They'll do a search for a small fee, & send you the results (they can be e-mailed). But one possibility you have to face is that you won't find him in High Wycombe baptisms. Brother? 3. Doesn't his marriage certificate tell you his father's name? Looks like he married Eton Registration District December Quarter 1848. Upton Cum Chalvey is in Eton Registration District. Have you gone through the PRs (not the IGI) for all churches in High Wycombe for his baptism? Perhaps try the Bucks FHS baptisms search service to see if he is on their database. It's very reasonably priced. In 1841 he may have been apprenticed and not with his family. HTIOH D. 2. I am interested in the Harris, Stapp/Stepp and Buffington families of BKS. This is the information that I have but it is not verified. William Harris [ca.1736 - 1792 VA USA] William Harris II [1748 - 1821 VA USA] his son John Abraham Stapp/Stepp [ca.1600 - ca.1679 VA USA] Mary Woodward [UK-VA USA] his wife Abraham STAPP [ca.1620-1658 BKS] his son--This is my 8-great grandfather. 3. Hi Back to BUCKS I've been searching for a William FOWLER my 3xG Grandfather since about 2001, without any luck. It seems his son thought he had been born in ETON. However I've recently discovered he was born in Waddesdon 1813 and subsequently moved with parents to ETON.I'm looking for information on the marriage of William and Sarah Allen in Waddesdon 1812 and William's birth about 1783. There are connections with Little Kimble and Aston Clinton. It seems likely that Sarah Allen was the daughter of Thomas Allen and Sarah Tapping. This line has a focus on Sarah's, it appears that Thomas and both subsequent Williams married Sarahs I'd like to hear from anyone with interests in these failies regards Ted Fowler NSW Australia PS I didn't marry a Sarah

    3. I was at school with Richard Dukes at Wendover Church of England Primary School from 1955 to 1961. He then went onto the John Colet Secondary Modern School in Wendover, Bucks. (I passed the 11+ exam & went onto the Aylesbury Technical High School & lost touch with "Dickie" Dukes). He lived on the Honeydene Estate in Wendover, which is only 5 miles from Aylesbury. Don't know if this is any help! By the bye, I am a Warner from Wendover. Father was William Warner born 16/08/1894 Coldharbour, Tring Road, Wendover. He was the manager of W H Smith & Son bookstalls on Wendover and Great Missenden stations, retired through ill-health 1953. I believe I am related to Warners from Chesham. My grandfather Warner was a gardener/labourer at Halton House, a de Rothschilds house, later becoming the Officers Mess of RAF Halton. I now reside in Auckland, New Zealand. 1. [ENG-Buck] Origin of surname SPATCHER
    2. Celia Renshaw
    3. SPATCHERs (occasionally spelled SPACHER) were in the registers of Stowe from the start (1580). Outside of Stowe it's an incredibly rare name, up until the 19th century. I'm trying to find the surname's meaning/origins and to find out if there were SPATCHERs in north Bucks before 1580 - and I'm having trouble on both counts. Can anyone help? Anyone with a good surname dictionary or guide to surname etymology who could do a lookup please? The online reference sources I've tried don't include the name. Does anyone have any knowledge of the Stowe area pre-1580 who can guide on best places to look for earlier SPATCHERs? Any ideas or advice much appreciated. Celia Renshaw in Chesterfield UK
