Hi, I am new to this list and am looking to find the family of Ellen Smith. In 1881 she is listed as being in Amersham Workhouse age 22 single born Cardigan. I believe that she was living at Amersham/Chesham in the 1861 and 1871 census and wonder if sks could see if they can find her there with any parents and siblings. Thank you for any help with this request. Best Wishes Liz
Presumably from the original parish register. According to his notes, Dexter worked from film of the BTs, using an older partial transcript to help him decipher parts. I've noticed an earlier gap in the BTs for which the original register (as on the film in the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies) has entries. Would be nice if someone with access to that would fill out the gaps in Dexters otherwise excellent work. Paul Chris Rendle wrote: > Dear Paul, > > Thank you for finding Ann Byrne LANGFELL. Dear Paul, Thank you for finding Ann Byrne LANGFELL. We did receive info on Mary LANGFILL's details from another lister as follows: 1801 Mary D. Have found 5 Pauling entries in Boyds Marriage Index which have Vic. Gen. after them and nothing else. These were copied down years ago & are now of interest. I have found a site which has info on 1690s onwards but not for this time frame 1667 - 1685. I believe they are all Bucks & Oxon. One in particular is Leonard Pauling 1667, as this is a family name going back to late 1600s in Oakley Bucks, it is of great interest. The Oakley registers & churchwarden accounts don't cover this period so no joy there, any ideas on where to find the original entries. The Bledlow PR transcript of Dexter Eustis, online at http://www.lanchbury.id.au/genealogy/bledlow1800.html (19th century ) shows - 1804 Ann Byrne dau of James & Ann Southern Langfell born 6 July bapt 2 Sep Unfortunately, his source lacked anything between 4th May 1800 & April 1802, which may include Marys christening. Sorry Chris. There NO LANGFILL or LANGFELL down on my copy of the P Rs Sheila Dear List, We have a James LANGFILL, Excise Officer, who seems to have been stationed in Southwark, London, in 1797, Henley in around 1808 and Oxford 1816-1819. But one of the children of James and his wife Ann (nee SOUTHERN) gives her place of birth as Bledlow, Buckinghamshire, in the 1861 Census. This was Mary, born about 1801. As you say this is a probability but we have their death certificates still as Pateman. What we are thinking is if the children were baptised as babies then their Mother would have been in her 30s (according to the age on her death certificate) so were any children born to them before this date if so it is a strong possibility they would have been named after their parents JOHN and or JANE. Also William seems to be a family favourite all through the years. Maybe Jane had children before she met John? No marriage certificate has been found for them yet. They were together at both baptisms and when she died in the New Forest her certificate said wife of John, so would this mean he was still alive at the time of her death? We also have Patemans who used the Mothers maiden name of Major, Hence Major Pateman at first we thought we were looking for an Army Major. It all gets very confusing. In my hawker Gypsy families they often used the surname of the mother. For example, in my Gregory family, several of the children were baptised as Gregory (father's name), some as Lee (the mother's surname) and even a couple as Smith (the maternal grandmother's name!). This was not dependent on whether they were married or not. Could it be that your Pateman family could be using the wife's family name in the 1841 census?
