    3. Hello Sherrie. I cannot see John & Jane in any census - nor any of their children. Did they emigrate ? I see John Norris' birth registered 1863 Dec.Qtr. Amersham 3a 359. Not in 1865. I see also the confusing marriages on FreeBMD of a Jane Dickens in 1889 March Qtr. Amersham 3a 585 to George Morris Toms and (another?) John Morris Toms. Both on the same page - so I don't know what that signifies. I canot see those in censuses either. In 1881 at Amersham there is a John N.Toms age 17 b.Amersham, at home with his parents George Toms age 58 b.Amersham and his mother Mahalia Toms age 56 b.Abbotts Langley, Herts.and three other children. That is the only reference I found to a John N.Toms. In 1871 all the family were at Amersham (listed under the surname of "Fones") including two daughters, Mahalia 14 and Mary A. 12. In 1891 George 62 and Mahalia 66 were still in Amersham (with a footnote :- "also as George Torris") In 1851 George 22 and Mahalia 28, a straw plaiter, were in Amersham with a daughter Sarah Ann age 1 b.Amersham and a Sophia E.Ricketts age 5 "daughter before marriage" b.Watford. Not very helpful perhaps but that is all I found. Best wishes. 2. I've just realised that you could trace any baptisms & marriages in Amersham back further than civil registration, by buying the Bucks Family History Society transcription of the Amersham parish registers - www.bucksfhs.org.uk It only covers the town, not the registration district, & from FreeBMD you can't tell where in the registration district an event was, but in this case, it appears from the censuses that the TOMS family were in the town, & had been since at least the late 18th century. They were in the 1841 census. Won't help you with Jane Dickens, but the 1891 census should tell you where she was born, & her marriage certificate her fathers name & occupation. Good starting points. 1. Re: [ENG-Buck] TOMS, 1889, Buckingham, England
    2. FreeBMD shows George Norris TOMS birth was registered in Lambeth, March quarter (i.e. January to March) 1890. That's consistent with him being born on November 30th. Birth was supposed to be registered within 6 weeks. Births Mar 1890 Toms George Norris Lambeth Volume 1d Page 488 If you get his birth certificate (£7 last time I bought one, available online from https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp - they take credit & debit cards), using the FreeBMD reference above, it will confirm his parents, including his mothers maiden name, & their address. They should be in the same area - perhaps at the same address - in the 1891 census, as there are other children born in Lambeth after the census - Births Dec 1893 Toms Sydney Alfred D Lambeth 1d 462 Births Mar 1897 Toms Grace Maud Lambeth 1d 538 Births Mar 1898 Toms Frances Alice Lambeth 1d 349 But I can't see them in the 1901 census. Emigrated already? All the TOMS in Lambeth in 1901 - View Name Age Where born Administrative county Civil parish Occupation Ada Toms 30 Ldn Sambeth London Lambeth Albert Toms 32 Ldn Kennington London Lambeth Magistrates Clerk Alexander Toms 0 Ldn Brixton London Lambeth Juvenile Arthur G Toms 21 London St Georges E London Lambeth Clerk Ironmonges Elizabeth Toms 71 London London Lambeth Pensioner Formerly Governess Ethel Toms 10 London Brixton London Lambeth Juvenile Frederick Toms 3 London Brixton London Lambeth Juvenile Gertrude L Toms 21 South Norwood Of London Lambeth Hedley A Toms 37 Devon Plymouth London Lambeth Examining Officer H M Customs Horace J Toms 22 South Norwood Surr Of London Lambeth Solicitors Clerk View Name Age Where born Administrative county Civil parish Occupation Isabel M Toms 47 Devon Stonehouse London Lambeth Isabella Toms 72 Scotland London Lambeth Jessie Toms 52 Gloucester Bristol London Lambeth John Toms 49 Devon Stonehouse London Lambeth Retired Sanitary Engineer John B Toms 57 Kensington Of London Lambeth Salesman Antique Furniture Joseph Toms 46 Bucks Amersham London Lambeth Bricklayers Labourer Margaret A Toms 36 London Kennington London Lambeth Tale Woman Mary Toms 34 Bucks Prestwood London Lambeth Domestic Mary L Toms 51 Devon Plymouth London Lambeth William Toms 34 London Kennington London Lambeth Minicipal Clerk If you look in the 1881 census, you see that Joseph TOMS, born Amersham, had a younger brother John, aged 17 - i.e. born about 1864. There are a few Jane DICKENS about, including one from "Buckingham", a couple of years older than John, working as a servant in Camberwell, adjacent to Lambeth. Ah! The Amersham lot look right. Again on FreeBMD - Marriages Mar 1889 (>99%) DICKENS Jane Amersham 3a 585 TOMS John Morris Amersham 3a 585 And - TOMS George Morris Amersham 3a 585 Looks as if John & one of his brothers married around the same time, maybe even the same day. The marriage certificate should give names & occupations of the fathers of both bride & groom. There was a local history group in the village a while ago I'm not sure they are still active. You could try going to the MKHA web page: http://www.mkheritage.co.uk/ and selecting Olney and District Historical Society and contacting them information@olneyhistory.org.uk see if they can place "Emberton lee". A baptism search will only cost a few £££. This is the BFHS website: http://www.bucksfhs.org.uk. I see they've got Emberton baptisms from 1813.
