Leonard PAYNE-GILL died 20-08-1985 at Bridport, Dorset, aged 85. Born 15-08-1900. From Ancestry.co.uk UK deaths index, 1984-1992. Some people move to Bridport when they retire, which could be why Leonard was living there. My dad read a midwife diary. Those women were educated. I know one kept a diary about her excellent statistics on mortality during the late 18th cen. She kept a diary to prove she did the delivery so she could get paid. The author was Thatcher-Ulrich. The book is worth reading. You might try looking at the Aylesbury record office for diaries. My other idea was to look for a record of churching in a vicar's or curate's or church warden's diary. Let me know if you find anything. Hi Mark, As far as I know, midwifery registraton in the UK began in 1902 with the Midwives Act. Prior to that in 1870 the Obstetric Society of London offered midwives a voluntary exam, in order to gain more credibility and the Midwives Institute was founded in 1880 in London. I know this as a current student of midwifery rather than as a historian, but I hope it helps. I'd be very interested to know of anything you find relating to midwifery if you don't mind! Can anyone help please I have a MATTHEW ALDRIDGE c. 30/9/1753 Great Missenden Bucks married to SARAH. Eric
Could SKS with access to the 1871 Bucks Census please look up the following? Alice Jane Alderman born Abt 1862 in Swanbourne, daughter of Matthew & Jane. Matthew & Jane were living in Swanbourne in 1851 & 1881 but there is no sign of Alice on the census, she may have married by 1881 but no record on the IGI. Many thanks Mark
Could somebody please tell me if midwives were registered in 1851 with anybody, and if so, where would I be likely to find any records? Many thanks Mark

I have just received two birth certificates, 1891 and 1909, which give the place of birth respectively as Queen Street, St. Marys, Wolverton RSD Bucks and 42 Anson Road, Old Wolverton RSD Bucks. It is my understanding that Queen Street is in Stony Stratford and Anson Road is in Wolverton. Can any local please confirm this for me? Regards Ron Goodwin, Chorley, Lancs.
