Helen There is a S. E. Payne-Gill in Burnham, Slough (postcode search on the BT site SL), Slough used to be in Bucks before it was moved to Berkshire and Stoke Poges is just north of Slough. Please note that the BT search will only find BT customers that are not Ex directory, a better search could be made using the electoral registers for the area if they are available. Perhaps someone on the list has access to the 1984/5 Electoral Registers for the area? I found the following in the 2003 UK Electoral Register at www.192.com (don't seem to be many around!). SONIA E PAYNE-GILL PARKGATE, WINDSOR LANE, BURNHAM, SLOUGH SL1 7HP RALPH P PAYNE-GILL PARKGATE, WINDSOR LANE, BURNHAM, SLOUGH SL1 7HP MARK E PAYNE-GILL GROUND FLOOR, 61 ALMA ROAD, CLIFTON, BRISTOL, BS8 2DW Alma Road in Bristol is fairly close to the University so Mark could have been a student at Bristol Uni in 2003. If anyone has access to the Crockford's Clerical Directory of 1858, could you please look up John Cross? In 1858 he is probably in Charlbury, Oxfordshire or Buckingham. He attended King's College in London were he completed his studies in Theology in 1853. Hi Sandra, Just a thought, but have you tried the wills at the National Archives? <www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/wills/default.htm> If he left a will it will (pardon the pun) give you when he died and maybe solve a mystery if he lived separately from his family during later years. Hope this helps, May Lanchbury Perth, Western Australia
Oops, my reply a moment ago to Sandra Smith's posting about the disappearing David Foskett was intended as a personal reply to Sandra, but I forgot that on this list a Reply goes to the whole list. Sorry, Sandra. Still, anyone who saw it will have realised that I have been carrying out a kind of One Place Study of Great Horwood in the 15th and 16th centuries (it's research for a PhD thesis, in fact). I haven't quite finished my analysis of all my data yet, and I hadn't intended to make a public offer to do searches in it until the job was complete (fearing inundation with requests at a time when I'm rather behind schedule and struggling to finish), but as I have inadvertently let the cat of the bag I may as well go public now. If anyone sends me details of an ancestor who lived in Great Horwood or the immediately neighbouring parishes (Winslow, Little Horwood, Whaddon and Nash, Thornborough, Addington and Adstock) before 1600, I'll look in my database for references to that ancestor, or other persons of the same surname, and send back a Word table containing them all. Depending on how many requests I get it may take a while for me to reply (and I'm going to be away for most of the next 3 weeks so it definitely won't be till after I get back), but I promise that I will reply to everyone in due course. Mark, In the civil registration index I found an Alice Jane Alderman who married in 1894 in Hungerford. I don't know if she is the Alice you are looking for but here is the information: Name: Alderman, Alice Jane Record Type: Marriages Quarter: December Year: 1894 District: Hungerford County: Berkshire Hampshire Wiltshire Volume: 2c Page: 581 Apparently she married Charles Bowley. They are the only two in that page. If you order the certificate form the GRO it will tell you the name of his and her father. I also found her entry of birth: Name: ALDERMAN, Alice Jane Record Type: Births Quarter: December Year: 1862 District: Winslow County: Buckinghamshire Volume: 3a Page: ___ (sorry, page number not given) Swanbourne is very close to Winslow. My ancestors were from Mursley and they were also registered in Winslow. Hope this helps. Hello Sandra, that's a coincidence, I was just thinking about sending you an email, about the Great Horwood Fosketts. I've now finished the research stage of my project, and have moved onto the analysis of the mountains of notes I have created. Just recently I have been working out the family trees of the residents and tenants of Great Horwood in the 15th and 16th centuries, and yesterday did the Foxcotes/Foscotes - your ancestors. Would you like to exchange information? You've already got most of my original data, of course, (though I have a little extra stuff you probably won't already have seen) but it'll be interesting to see if we have come up with the same interpretations of it. Especially as you have cast your net wider than just the Great Horwood records, and may therefore have evidence for relationships which aren't obvious from the GH records alone. I'll be particularly interested to hear whether you know anything of the origins of the John Foscote, yeoman, who was the reeve or bailiff of the manor of Great Horwood from 1506 until his death in 1545. If you're interested in an exchange, send me your version and I'll send you mine. Hi, For many years I have been trying to solve the mystery of the disappearance of David FOSKETT. He was born in Grandborough and baptised there in 1845, the son of Thomas and Faith. In 1868 he married Elizabeth Mary Howse of Hoggeston and had three daughters: Mary Ann Elizabeth (born 1869), Louisa Jane (born 1871) and Anne Rebecca (born 1873). In 1871 Elizabeth is living/staying in her parents home in Hoggeston with the eldest daughter. (No sign of David) David was received at Aylesbury Gaol on 11 September 1873, having been sentenced to 1 month's imprisonment for the theft of a razor. His residence at the time was given as Newport Pagnall. In 1881 Elizabeth is listed as a widowed servant in Thame, whilst her daughters are living with their maternal grandparents in Hoggeston. (However the "widowed" bit may be untrue, as some households would not employ married servants) In 1891, she is a servant in Aylesbury, but this time stating she is married. In 1901, she is living back in Hoggeston as a servant, again stated as being married. I have traced all three girls in the various census returns. David does not appear anywhere on the 1871, 1881, 1891 or 1901 census. I have also checked army records to see whether he may have enlisted. I have a complete listing of all Foskett's plus variants from the GRO (not FreeBMD) and his death is not recorded anywhere. Any suggestions as to what else I might consider?
