    3. Hello list, I am trying to find a connection between Mathew and Thomas Bunce. Both born in in about 1730s possibly in the Haltern area. it is possible that they were brothers. Unfortunately I do not have parental details, but if somebody would be kind enough to look up their births I would be very grateful. Lesley Blacklaws, [email protected]

    3. Hi List, First apologies for any cross-postings you may receive. I have never seen this site mentioned on any of the lists I belong to and thought it worthy of mention. The Book of Remembrance lists alphabetically Chelsea In-Pensioners with dates of birth, dates of death, the date they entered the Royal Hospital and their regiment or corps. The list is as yet incomplete and appears to contain mainly 20th century old soldiers. http://www.chelsea-pensioners.co.uk/remembrance.asp Sandra

    2. Pat Hase
    3. Paul Thank you so much for all your help - I'm well on my way to solving this problem and sorting out the BUCKLAND family. I now believe that Julia Ella was Isabella's daughter - hopefully her birth certificate will confirm this and Isabella's surname. I've had a look at the original index page containing the marriage of William BUCKLAND and Isabella Rosina - it looks to me like AITMEN (indexed by 1837online as Isabella Risona AITMON and by Freebmd as Isabella Rosanna AIT---). The surname AITMAN does occur in the county of Durham in 1881. This spell with the BUCKINGHAMSHIRE mailing list has been very productive. I'm really grateful for your interest and help. Pat

    2. SHEILA REYNOLDS
    3. Can any one tell me if a farm bailiff had to be able to read and write in the 1870s? My grt gr father put down on his marriage cert in 1874 that his father was farm bailiff, I know he could not write as he sign his marriages register with his mark and also when registering the birth of one of his children, he did the same thing. Was Henry trying to make out he was better then the family he was marring into? Sheila.

    3. It's not such a disaster - buy it online at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ & it's only £7, if you have the full reference (& it sounds as if you do). And it'll give her mothers maiden name, as well. In the meantime, here's Thomas & family in the 1851 census - E. Burnham Manor Hse. Thomas BUCKLAND 56 wid Market Gardener b Farnham Royal George son 22 Gardener b Burnham Elizabeth dau 19 Housekeeper do Sophia Caroline dau 11 Scholar do HO107/1718 671 0067 Oh! Also in Burnham (but not next door), Isabella Rosina BUCKLAND 24 b Newcastle on Tyne, Gardeners wife, & daughter Rosina Car. Mary, age 1 b Burnham. HO107/1718 675 002. I see Isabella was operating on 15 month years from 1851 to 1871. Ahh, vanity! There are others in Burnham, but there's no obvious connection. BTW, FreeBMD shows a William Buckland marrying someone called Isabella Rosanna Ait... (probably - same page) in 1848. 2Q (June), Marylebone district, vol 1 p 206. Aitken? I'd be tempted to get that certificate next, if I was you. 3. Paul, That was kind of you to look but yes I had been given that by a friend and I'm sorry, I should have mentioned that in my original email. I've just received some more information which identifies Isabella's husband as a William BUCKLAND - in 1871 he is in Gloucestershire and has with him a daughter also born in Cotterstock. So it looks as if Julia might have been their daughter. It looks as if I shall have to bite the bullet and send for her birth certificate! Is their anyone else on this list interested in this family? A marriage & name change for her would suffice. And don't get her mixed up with the other unmarried Jane WINGROVEs - aged 21 in Chesham, 27 in Amersham or 17 in Tylers Green. They're all over the place! The BGS 1861 census is out soon. That may help. It may show Cornelius widowed or remarried. Paul
