Hello Everyone, I have a problem with my OXLADE family in Hambleden and wonder if anyone could help please? I have James baptised 3 Jun 1827 to William and Kezziah. No problem there until we get to his parents, William and Kezziah. I did have William baptised 13 Aug 1780 Hambleden, and not knowing any other siblings for James presumed that James was the last of a batch and that this was OK. But now I have seen the 1841 Census record that Alex so kindly looked up for me I can see a younger William married to a Kezziah. Are there 2 William and Kezziah OXLADE couples? William OXLOWD 30 Ag lab born in county Kezia OXLOWD 30 born in county Eliza OXLOWD 10 born in county George OXLOWD 8 born in county William OXLOWD 5 born in county Daniel OXLOWD 1 born in county (West Wycome HO107/055 ED 16 folio 8 pg 11) Please, if someone has the Hambleden PRs, could they look to see if there are in fact 2 William baptisms? One in Aug 1780 and one c1811. Are there also 2 marriages? One was definitely 14 Apr 1827, and perhaps one in about 1807. Very many thanks, May LANCHBURY Joondalup, Western Australia

Hello Listers, Would someone please verify an entry on the 1841 census for the first child in the family of JAMES BARLOW, living at Moors End near Hambleden. This is what I have copied from the film. JAMES BARLOW 50 CARPENTER Y HANNAH BARLOW 45 JANE 19 ***** MARY 15 GEORGE 13 MOSES 8 WILLIAM 4 REBECCA 2 I haven't been able to find the birth for Jane, there is another daughter named Ann who would have been about that age and there was a son John, who would have been around 20. Can someone kindly check the entry and confirm the name of the first child for me please. Thank you Carol, Ontario, Canada

Thanks for that!! Very, very useful William was my 3x great grandfather which must mean that Thomas was my 4 x great grandfather. Yes, I found Shem on BMD - he died in 1875, probably in the Asylum, poor soul! What unusual names they had! Another one was Caleb - if they were religious, it certainly hasnt been passed through the generations!!!! Noah married in Aylesbury in 1852 (on the IGI - you didn't spot it, did you?), & the Aylesbury St. Mary parish registers tell us his father was Thomas SLATTER, tailor. FreeBMD has entries for Noah, Shem (you should have guessed that, with Noah as a clue), & other Slatters. St. John was the Asylum, at Stone, between Haddenham & Aylesbury, which later became a psychiatric hospital. Closed (in the 1980s, I think) & since demolished. They also sell a transcription of the 1851 census for a very reasonable price, & Bucks Genealogical Society at www.bucksgs.org.uk are about to start selling the 1861 census, also good value. Hello everyone, I was wondering if some kind person who had access to the 1841 census for Bucks were able to look something up for me? I'm looking for the family of my direct ancestor William RUTLAND who was born circa 1831 in Little Kimble. He was the son of John (who may have died by that time) and Ann (born circa 1797 in Bucks). I thought I had it in my records but I can't find it written down. And also if anyone is researching the name SLAUGHTER in Great Hampden and surrounding area I would be very grateful for some assistance. Hello Bucks Listers! A search of all available census on Ancestry has, as usual, provided me with as many questions as answers and I'm hoping someone may be able to help. I am looking at SLATTERs in Haddenham and there were a good many there in the 1800s. Unfortunately, I cant find any Haddenham entries for Slatter on the IGI. For some reason they dont seem to have been transcribed. Does anyone know why? Does SKS have access to Parish Registers for Haddenham? Noah Slatter born 1831 Richard Slatter born 1835 Thomas Slatter born 1836 James Slatter born 1837 William Slatter born 1838 all in Haddenham. I'm wondering if these were all brothers. I'd be pleased with any info Also I have a Shein (!) slatter born 1840 Haddenham who, in 1871 was in an institution. He is described as a patient and the staff as medical attendants. Although I have looked at the original image, I cant find out what sort of place this was. The address is Stone, St John, Stone. Does anyone know anything about this place and is it still there. One last thing, I have an Enoch Slatter who was the Publican at the White Hart in Haddenham. Is this place still there? Thanks for any info Cheers Geraldine
Hi Iris..... He doesn't appear to be in the Little Lementon/Hanslope census for 1841 (incidently one of the Hanslope enumerators has the most beautiful copperplate writing and his book has survived the ages well - what a pleasure to look through!) Given that Ephraim has grandchildren with him in 1851, all born in Castlethorpe, as he was, that would be my next guess for his 1841 location. I managed to work out that Castlethorpe was probably in the Newport Pagnell enumeration districts, but not sure exactly which one, and the majority of entries are unreadable. There are MEADOWs in the one ED which is readable, but I didn't spot an Ephraim on a quick look through. If Ephraim's mother was Mary, she is still going strong at age 89 - I can provide the full details if she is yours. Can anyone help me with a photograph? I have been passed a wartime black and white photograph about 4 inches by 3 inches in size. It is of a sculptress in an old beamed cottage. The label on the back says: "Mary Durasova, the wellknown [Czechoslovak] sculptress, is working in her Buckinghamshire studio on a bust of the Prime Minister. Mrs Durasova's hostess is Miss Augusta North, an English artist. As Mr. Churchill is too busy with the war, Mary Durasova had to model his head according to photographs. Here she is comparing her work and photographs in her library." taken by Erich Auerbach, official photographer to the Czechoslovak Government in Exile. I know that Czechoslovaks were living in Addington, Wingrave and Aston Abbotts but I am not aware of a Augusta North in any of those places. Do this mean anything to anyone? Neil Rees Bucks
The further back we go in our GARDNER (sometimes GARDENER or GARDINER) family the further west the seem to be, a few miles with each generation. I'm now looking at Thomas baptised Horton, Bucks.24 November 1815, together with his siblings and parents. We have a lot of info on the siblings, but some confusion about the parents. His father was also Thomas, and mother was a Mary, but it is not clear whether this was Mary Smith who married a Thomas Gardiner in High Wycombe on 25 Dec 1789 Mary Priscilla Ricket who married a Thomas Gardiner in High Wycombe on 8 Sep 1788. The family tended to be "paper makers" over several generations. Any connections? Happy hunting! Diana Robinson Now in Rochester, NY, USA

Hi Patricia Not much luck I'm afraid. I should say first that there are literally hundreds of names that can't be read as they are too faint - High Wycombe and West Wycombe is split into 18 enumeration districts, and some whole EDs are unreadable. Perhaps another scan might be a bit better (I have the S&N set). I did find the following HUTCHINSONs in High Wycombe: Ann? HUTCHINSON 40 School Mistress not born in county (Stellary St, HO107/055 ED 2 folio 10 pg 15) Edmund HUTCHINSON 40 Chair M born in county Mary HUTCHINSON 40 born in county Esther HUTCHINSON 20 born in county Mary Ann HUTCHINSON 15 born in county Eliza HUTCHINSON 15 born in county Edmund HUTCHINSON 14 born in county and in the same house but listed as a separate household all by herself: Mary EDMONDS 5 born in county (Stellary St, HO107/055 ED 2 folio 13 pg 20) I wonder if maybe the HUTCHINSONs didn't have an enduring relationship with the area, despite William's occupation - there are no HUTCHINSONs in Wycombe in the Posse Comitatus records (1798), and only one burial in the National Burial Index (which covers 1813-1817 and 1828-1851 for High Wycombe). Hi everyone, High Wycombe Library have a name index transcription of the 1841 High Wycombe census, as it is a hard-cover bound book I imagine it was transcribed before the time of common home computing. I'm quite happy to look up these names for you as I'm based in High Wycombe so it's not a problem to get to the library. I'll have a look next time I'm there.
