    3. Hi Listers, Pat, Gil, Ruth, Carl, Nick; Julie, Tony and all you who have helped me blast the brickwall. I understand that the census takers occasionally registered visiting relatives, especially youngsters, as servants? Jane (or is it Jake? hard to read) Parkes and Maria Murry may be examples from this (augmented) 1841 census: Also, would someone clarify the '41 census recording of age policy? Do they round adults age to nearest decade? I have George Cooper, 1st wife Abigail, 2nd wife Sarah in Bilston about 1815 to 1860. He was into coal & iron. 16+/- children including: George (age 50 '41 Census Bilston District 16 south side of Church St., page 1/39) occup. iron monger Sarah (age 30 '41 Census) George (1814 IGI), Mary Ann (1816 IGI?), Joseph (1818 IGI), William (1819 IGI) (1821 '41 Cens*), James abt 1821, George 1823? John 1825? Joseph (abt 1827 '41 Cens) Abigail (abt 1830 '41 Cens) Lila(Lala?) (abt 1832 '41 Cens) Thomas (abt 1834 '41 Cens) George (abt 1835 '41 Cens) Mary (abt 1837 '41 Cens) Samuel (abt 1838 '41 Cens) Ann (abt 1840 '41 Cens) Kinney / Henney (5 mos '41 Cens) Governess Martha Blinkshaw (age 20 '41 Cens), FS Maria Murry (age 22, '41 Cens), FS Jane/Jake Parkes age 13, '41 Cens). Any connections? Thank you all Bob Oceanside, Calif.

    3. >>Also, would someone clarify the '41 census recording of age policy? Do >>they round adults age to nearest decade?<< Bob, despite the various things that people say, and I am sure they are very well informed, the truth of the 1841 census, as I have found it to be (and the other years for that matter) is that there is no "uniforming" of rounding up or down, it seems to have depended much on what the enumerator wanted to do that particular day, or even on that particular entry, and it also depened on the information he was given, much of that was guess work, or even lies LOL (ladies hiding thier real ages/bigamous marriages/illigitimates) I guess, we have to look at ourselves now, how do we react to completing the censuses? most people think they ask too many questions, ( i personally always answer 2 questions fascisiously LOL "SEX" and "RACE", I answer "yes please" and "Human" !!) and a lot of people have things they don't want recording on censuses, take that back to 1841, and people then were almost terrified of the enumerator LOL and wanted to impress him, wanted to show they knew their names, ages etc when most of them didn't have a clue! So, if you are pretty sure you have found one of your rellies, but thier age is fluctuating, but other factors lead you to believe they are "yours" GO WITH IT see where it leads! there's always a 50/50 chance you are right!! and they are pretty good odds LOL I have one that is 50 on one census, but only 56 on the next one! one is 56 on one census but only 47 on the next!!!! If everyone was "rounded up or down" they would all be aged in 5's and 10's!! go with what your "genealogy gut feeling" tells you and let somebody else DISPROVE IT LOL (saves you the legwork!) you will find your "GGF" works pretty well as a radar for finding your own!! Happy Hunting!! Mellie How Come My Coat Of Arms Has Buckles At The Back?
