Well while we are on about phrases I have always wondered if the rhyme my grandpa used to say to my kid brother (which always reduced him to a tantrum...so well worth the effort!) was a traditional one or just summat he made up: "Lickle jissey jasey Is na bloody gud Chop tha lickle begger up fa fire wood If he squeals Pull is tail Send tha lickle bugger off ta Stafford Jail" Any ideas? Nick
Sounds like a very similar to one from my childhood. They are all derivations of the same rhyme known nationwide: eeny meeny miny mo catch a german by his toe if he squeals pull his tail send him off to jerry jail Usually used in the playground to ascertain who was 'it'. Oh, how we have made up variations. My dad's version, but likely his father's before him, was: Eeny meeny miny mo, Catch a Whitehouse by the toe, If he hollers make him pay, 50 dollars every day. Of course we kids loved it. > eeny meeny miny mo > catch a german by his toe > if he squeals pull his tail > send him off to jerry jail Paul Whitehouse, Maryland, USA -- Researching Black Country names: WHITEHOUSE, DAVIS, LEES, SPITTLE, SMALL, DITHERIDGE, BEDDOW, TAYLOR, ASTON, ATTWOOD, RICHARDS, PEERS, WRIGHT.
