    3. Just wondered whether anyone has had any experience of using the familyrelatives.org site and whether it differs from sites such as 1837online.com, etc which use the scanned images from the General Register indexes? The familyrelatives site claims to have a fully searchable database for Births, Marriages and Deaths, so can one actually search on full name, rather than just be directed to each page which might or might not contain the required surname? Any thoughts gratefully received. I already subscribe to 1837online, Ancestry, British Origins and FamilyHistoryOnline, so it is becoming an expensive hobby. Is there any benefit in joining FamilyRelatives too? Many thanks for any opinions on this. Wendy

    3. Hi Wendy, I've just been using up my credits on Family Relatives. For most years it is just the same as using 1837.com and Ancestry BUT the 1866 - 1920 searches, are superior. For 1866 - 1920 it's like using FreeBMD in that you key in a name, registration area and it comes up the results for that name and place only. For example yesterday I was looking for COYNE born Walsall so that's what I keyed in and it gave me 140 Coynes - it gives 20 names per page and you use 2 units per page. The entries from 1911 - 1920 also give you the mothers maiden name. The same kind of search applies to marriages but there is an extra button to click so if you want to check the spouse you can do so with one click of the button (it gives you the names on the register page not the individual name). All in all I think it's like the other sites but better for the 1866 - 1920 range. If you prepared to plough through the images then Ancestry is good as it's free at the moment (I think) providing you register with them. 3. Hi Wendy, As Judy says it's only any good for 1866-1920 and you have to pay to view each page which is 20 results. Whenever possible I try to limit the results of my search by applying a date range and using the region map or selected registration districts. When you have made the search (which is free but requires you to have credits in your account) it will tell you how many results there are and ask whether you wish to view them or amend your search criteria. To view 1 result will cost you the same as viewing 20 results (1 page). Just as 21 results will cost the same as 40 (2 pages) When you view a results page there is a link to see an image of the actual entry but that will cost you more credits and is unnecessary since you will already have all the details i.e year, quarter, registration district and GRO reference number etc. I have found the facility, which allows you type in surname and mother's maiden name for births from 3rd qtr 1911 to 1920, very useful in tracing siblings of my ancestors born around that period. Oh, and the wild card symbol is % not * as with Ancestry.
