    3. Hi Sue, who said; > > I suspect that they put an address on the birth certificates of Workhouse > babies to save embarrassment in the future when the person might have to > produce their certificates. > True. I quote from an announcement in the Bridgnorth Journal (Shropshire) dated 24 September 1904. "Registration of Births in Workhouses. The Registrar-General has now received the sanction of the Local Government Board to alter the regulation for registrars, so that all direct reference to the workhouse shall be omitted from the entries recording births that occur in workhouses. An alternative description of the place of birth in these cases, as suggested by the various boards of guardians, will be provided. This concession will be greatly appreciated by poor-law reformers, and will, moreover, remove the disability from which children born in the workhouse suffer in after-life." End quote. All the best, Gwynne Chadwick Transcribing the Bridgnorth (Shropshire) town census. http://www.chadwickg.freeserve.co.uk
