My Grandmother used to roll a cube of butter in sugar and make you suck it for a cough. It worked in as much as you dared not cough again for fear of getting another one. Also, she used to keep a pot of tea simmering on the stove until it was nicely stewed, and then add a good dollop of Carnation evaporated milk.Sickly or what? My grandfather swore by sugared onion for coughs which sounds dreadful but does actually work. My father and I have continued this "tradition".
