Hi Bryan >>Since i was at gmother's 80th birthday party i at least have the quarter and year<< But don't forget that one had 42 days to register a birth, so that, for example, a birth in mid-November might appear in the index for the March quarter of the following year. But in 1910, when Pensions were first introduced, not everyone entitled had a birth certificate anyway, having been born before 1 Jul 1837, so a baptism certificate was accepted as well, and in many cases the censuses were consulted too, hence the statement at the top of the 1911 Household schedule "The returns are not to be used for proof of age, as in connection with Old Age Pensions..." - just in case people were tempted to record themselves as older than they really were...:-) There are cases of births just not being registered, but more often than not they are there, but lurking somewhere unexpected (especially to those who don't know about the 42 days grace), under a strange mis-spelling (such as YEWBERRY for RUBERY!) or another surname altogether (such as the mother's maiden name). I have been trying to follow this thread, but have been working very long hours this week, so I apologise if I have missed it, but did you actually ever post the details of the person whose birth you were seeking? HI Polly, Good of you to respond and suggest naming my candidate. Following you suggestion, i looked for my grandmother under her mother's maiden name and there she was, together with a third forename being her father's surname, in Q4 1877. I hope I can return the assistance one day. Many thanks. Bryan
Hi Bryan Well what can I say, except I am very glad that you found it!
