Indeed Family History Societies are the best resource as Registers are transcribed by volunteers who either live in or know the area. This minimises the risk of inaccuracies, but it does not rule it out entirely. However, you should always check the original record if possible. Increasingly County archives are digitising records so it is a case of keep an eye on developments. There are however more Societies than shown on the Genealogist! The primary source in tracking down a Family History Society must be the Federation of Family History Societies http://www.ffhs.org.uk/members2/contacting.php An alternative to ancestry is Find My Past http://www.findmypast.co.uk/home.jsp as they are now host transcriptions of FFHS member Societies that were previously on Family History Online. See http://www.findmypast.co.uk/search/parish-records/baptisms for details of what is available and the contributing Society.
