I've found Ancestry better for searching censuses etc Keith, with occasional forays into FMP for some of the parish registers they have there. Our Family History Group runs drop-in computer classes where we can demonstrate the various sites, both free and subscription, and show people how to get the best out of the searches - lateral thinking and a vivid imagination are useful! You may well find that there's something similar held in your own area which would help you get a taster and make your mind up as to which is most suitable for you. Libraries also sometimes run one-off classes in using Ancestry as a lot of them have subscriptions.
