Hello Listers I wonder if someone would be able to help me please. I have received a copy of a letter referring to my husbands g grandmother Jane GARRATT born Austria 1838 and died 1909 Dudley. She and her husband lived in Birmingham near Dudley Castle. Apparently, Jane GARRATT had become a 'drinker' and her husband William GARRATT put her into a private nursing home. The nursing home must have been very expensive as in the letter I have it said that there were beautiful carpets everywhere and all the staff wore starched white uniforms. Jane GARRATT had her own suite of rooms and when visitors arrived they were waited on by a selective member of staff. Would anyone be able to let me know of any private nursing homes that would fit this description in the early 1900's or if there is a website that I would be able to have a look at to find information. Thanks in advance. Jo Australia
Hi Jo, Dudley Town was in Worcestershire, the Black Country not Birmingham. This Black Country Site may have some helpful information:-http://blackcountryhistory.org/ Could you post Wm and Jane's Census details, someone may have them in their tree? Hi Jo Does it have the place of death on her death certificate? Velda
>Hi Jo, Dudley Town was in Worcestershire, the Black Country not Birmingham. >This Black Country Site may have some helpful >information:-http://blackcountryhistory.org/ >Could you post Wm and Jane's Census details, someone may have them in their >tree? >Linda....... Hi Linda and Velda Thankyou for your replies.. Jane Garratt's 1901 Census is as follows William Garratt Head 65 Labourer born Germany Jane Garratt Wife 62 born Germany Address 3d Holland St Parish Dudley Ecclesiastical Parish St Lukes Jane Garratt's death certificate - died 27/12/1908 of Morbus Cordis Exhaustion. I am going by what was said in a letter that was found written by one of her grandchildren who said Jane Garratt's husband William put her into a private nursing home because of her drinking. Do you think I would be better off posting this on the Worcestershire List. Thank you Jo Australia ________________________________
Hi Jo, as Velda said the address of Jane's place of death should be on her death certificate, also an informant, do you have that? I would think that any Private Nursing Homes would be listed in either Kelly's Directory or the Post Office Directory, I don't have them for that time period, maybe someone else on here can check the Trade Directories for circa 1908. You can try the Worcs list, but Dudley was/is the heart of the Black Country. Hope this helps. Hi Linda Thanks for your advice. I have just found a 'live' relative connected to this couple, and they are going to do some 'digging around' for me. Thank you so much for your help and Velda too. Jo
