Hi Linda and Velda Thankyou for your replies.. Jane Garratt's 1901 Census is as follows William Garratt Head 65 Labourer born Germany Jane Garratt Wife 62 born Germany Address 3d Holland St Parish Dudley Ecclesiastical Parish St Lukes Jane Garratt's death certificate - died 27/12/1908 of Morbus Cordis Exhaustion. I am going by what was said in a letter that was found written by one of her grandchildren who said Jane Garratt's husband William put her into a private nursing home because of her drinking. Do you think I would be better off posting this on the Worcestershire List. Thank you Jo Australia ________________________________

I have received a copy of a letter referring to my husbands g grandmother Jane GARRATT born Austria 1838 and died 1909 Dudley. She and her husband lived in Birmingham near Dudley Castle. Apparently, Jane GARRATT had become a 'drinker' and her husband William GARRATT put her into a private nursing home. The nursing home must have been very expensive as in the letter I have it said that there were beautiful carpets everywhere and all the staff wore starched white uniforms. Jane GARRATT had her own suite of rooms and when visitors arrived they were waited on by a selective member of staff. Would anyone be able to let me know of any private nursing homes that would fit this description in the early 1900's or if there is a website that I would be able to have a look at to find information. 2. My goodness! And I thought people might be on holiday! I've just returned to my computer and found lots of helpful messages - many thanks to you all. Thank you for the reference numbers Eric, and yes, Cassy, I had a note he was a twin but had got no further than noting it in the GRO index. Sydney married one of my great aunts and I was just trying to "tidy" up what information I had about him. I just couldn't think what search criteria to use for the surname on Ancestry. I've done a fair bit of creative thinking on the census today and I think I'd just run out of ideas for this one ...!
