I've found Ancestry better for searching censuses etc Keith, with occasional forays into FMP for some of the parish registers they have there. Our Family History Group runs drop-in computer classes where we can demonstrate the various sites, both free and subscription, and show people how to get the best out of the searches - lateral thinking and a vivid imagination are useful! You may well find that there's something similar held in your own area which would help you get a taster and make your mind up as to which is most suitable for you. Libraries also sometimes run one-off classes in using Ancestry as a lot of them have subscriptions. TIMMINS: Hi Lynn, I phoned the number that I had for Ann TIMMINS' mother, but unfortunately the automatic operator told me that there was no connection anymore. The number was:01384-402324. (Since there is no answer I feel that it is okay to display the number here) When I was trying to find people for the reunion, which was many many years ago, I used "www.192.com". May I suggest that you could put in Alfred Timmins and Gornal and see what turns up. If that does not help, just try plugging in other Christian names and look at the addresses in Gornal. Worth a try if you are hitting a brick wall. So many people are doing Genealogy these days, that a phone call from a stranger, may not be so unwelcome as previously. Keep smiling, Joan On 10/13/2011 2:00 AM, eng-black-country-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > Today's Topics: > > 1. Hi Keith I have both but prefer Ancestry using the "old search" method. If you want military records of during the 19th century then you need find my past. I find the databases on Ancestry are of more use to me personally and having the London Metropolitan Archives online seem to come into use for all branches of my basically Midlands family. I'm thinking of buying a subscription to one of the online sites such as Ancestry and Find My Past. Any recommendations from people already using one of these sites would be most helpful. Thanks Keith
Keith, Not knowing what and where you are researching makes it difficult to give a good recommendation. I am finding I often use familysearch.org to start my search and then findmypast to find and trace families via the census but I have also used Ancestry to start with. The biggest problem I have found with any site is mistakes whether it was the census enumerator, the person giving the information, transcription error or even the parish records as often the record was not written down at the time of the ceremony. My Charlton family has been written with expected Charteton and variations but also Carlton and Charton to give you an example. My suggestion would be to try one for a period of time then switch to the other if you get too frustrated with the difficulty of judging where there is an error. Genealogy is like doing a jigsaw puzzle that you are missing pieces and when you find the missing piece you find you are missing more pieces. Maggie, I have searched the 1841 census for my Samuel Butler family without success as they could have moved before the census from West Bromwich to Smethwick. Is there an email address for the Smethwick Archives that I could make an inquiry? Thanks for the information on the possible reason I can't locate them. Smethwick Archives have a searchable list of people in 1841 that they have managed to save, but that might not be on Ancestry. Hello Rita The 1841 Census for Oldbury and West Bromwich was written in pencil and has faded too badly to transcribe. To add to that, a number of census books were water damaged in the basement of West Bromwich Town Hall - so there is quite a lot of it missing. Smethwick Archives have a searchable list of people in 1841 that they have managed to save, but that might not be on Ancestry. Thank you Joan for the information about Ann Timmins and her Mother. I would be grateful if you could give her Mum a call but I would do it if she agrees to me having her phone number. I don't want you to run up any phone costs on my behalf. I have received another email from Sandra Yate who has spotted someone on Geanes Reunited who is researching Alfred Timmins from Gornal Wood. Maybe this could be a lead too.
