Is anyone on the list looking for WOOD ? I have my WOOD family in Aston and Birmingham in late 1800's and 1900's William WOOD son of George WOOD and Jane Aileen
Good news... the Black Country History webstie's online catalogue now appears to be functioning properly, i.e. you can enter search terms using inverted commas (whereas before, searching for things like Himley Hall or Dud Dudley, was a complete nightmare because it used to bring up every document contianing "Hall" or "Dudley"!). They definitely deserve a pat on the back for sorting this out, as it will make finding document references so much easier. Adding documents to this catalogue is however an ongoing (almost never ending) project, and it has to be said there's not very much on there yet for documents at Sandwell Archives, compared to Dudley, Wolverhampton, and Walsall. Hopefully, given time, it will continue to grow. Happy hunting Carl
Indeed Family History Societies are the best resource as Registers are transcribed by volunteers who either live in or know the area. This minimises the risk of inaccuracies, but it does not rule it out entirely. However, you should always check the original record if possible. Increasingly County archives are digitising records so it is a case of keep an eye on developments. There are however more Societies than shown on the Genealogist! The primary source in tracking down a Family History Society must be the Federation of Family History Societies http://www.ffhs.org.uk/members2/contacting.php An alternative to ancestry is Find My Past http://www.findmypast.co.uk/home.jsp as they are now host transcriptions of FFHS member Societies that were previously on Family History Online. See http://www.findmypast.co.uk/search/parish-records/baptisms for details of what is available and the contributing Society. Mike Thanks for your information. My interest lies in most of The Black Country so I'm looking mainly for the parishes of Sth Staffs and a few in Nth Worcs. Having looking on your link to the list of parishes, unfortunately Staffordshire doesn't appear, however, I'll try the local History Societies and FreeREG too. Appreciate the advice Rob -----Original Message----- From: eng-black-country-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-black-country-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Mike in Droitwich Sent: 16 November 2011 12:43 To: eng-black-country@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Black Country] Point me in the right direction Hi Rob The best people for PR transcription are that area Family History Society or the Local History Society for the parish concerned. Hello Paul - I don't think anyone has a great coverage on Parish Records. I just order them into my local LDS Centre - only takes a couple of weeks for them to arrive and they keep them there for as long as you need them. Hi Paul, It depends where your area of interest lies. Ancestry has the PR images and indexes for Warwickshire, London, West Yorkshire and possibly Liverpool (not sure about the latter) while FMP has PR images and indexes for the Manchester area and Cheshire. Both say they are going to add more PR's but don't say when. I use both Ancestry and FMP.and would find it hard to say which one I would give up. Hi all, Does anyone have a photograph of the teachers at Etheridge Secondary Modern Boys School that they could send me a copy of? I have a copy from a newspaper cutting that is well worn and hardly recognisable now which I have tried scanning and digitally enhancing but the improvement is hardly noticeable. You know what they say "You can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear" I would also be very grateful for any information, photographs or stories about any of the Etheridge schools. The reason for my request is, my children are bullying me into writing about my school days telling me that when I get my Knighthood I would be expected to compile my memoirs'. Yea Right, but you never know it may be interesting enough for inclusion on these pages and it gets them of my back, so any information would be gratefully received. Regards, Ed Elks.
