    2. (With) a grain of salt is a literal translation of a _Latin_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin) phrase, (cum) grano salis. A pinch of salt may also be used. In common _parlance_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parlance) , if something is to be taken with a grain of _salt_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt) , it means that a measure of healthy _scepticism_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skepticism) should be applied regarding a claim; that it should not be blindly accepted and believed without any doubt or reservation. According to the _Oxford English Dictionary_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford_English_Dictionary) 'to take 'it' with a grain of salt' means 'to accept a thing less than fully'. It dates this usage back to _1647_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1647) The phrase comes from _Pliny the Elder_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pliny_the_Elder) 's _Naturalis Historia_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pliny's_Natural_History) , regarding the discovery of recipe for an _antidote_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antidote) to a _poison_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poison) . In the antidote, one of the ingredients was a grain of salt. Threats involving the poison were thus to be taken "with a grain of salt" and therefore less seriously. In reality salt is not an antidote to poison. Retrieved from "_http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grain_of_salt_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grain_of_salt) "

    3. Many thanks to Judy and Chris and also to Maureen who replied off-list. All your comments are very much appreciated and it would appear that FamilyRelatives seems to score better than other sites for 1866-1920 entries, and also the mother's maiden name facility between 1911 and 1920 seems to be very useful. But maybe Ancestry is the best all round site. So I will seriously consider whether or not to take out a subscription to FamilyRelatives. Many thanks to you again for your input. It is very gratefully received. Wendy

    3. Hi Wendy, As Judy says it's only any good for 1866-1920 and you have to pay to view each page which is 20 results. Whenever possible I try to limit the results of my search by applying a date range and using the region map or selected registration districts. When you have made the search (which is free but requires you to have credits in your account) it will tell you how many results there are and ask whether you wish to view them or amend your search criteria. To view 1 result will cost you the same as viewing 20 results (1 page). Just as 21 results will cost the same as 40 (2 pages) When you view a results page there is a link to see an image of the actual entry but that will cost you more credits and is unnecessary since you will already have all the details i.e year, quarter, registration district and GRO reference number etc. I have found the facility, which allows you type in surname and mother's maiden name for births from 3rd qtr 1911 to 1920, very useful in tracing siblings of my ancestors born around that period. Oh, and the wild card symbol is % not * as with Ancestry.
