Hello List In my rush to get my message on the list, I forgot to add the place... William Riley married Jane Lloyd in Tipton on 7 March 1827. In which church would this wedding have taken place?
Interesting that you mention PERCIVAL, Rob. Where are yours from? I have Percivals in Birmingham (1870s onwards), Leicester (1830s onwards), various Leicestershire villages (early 1700s onwards) and Rutland (late 1600s) If this ties in with your own research, would love to hear from you. At present I am trawling through all the Percivals listed on IGI by just entering the surname and region (British isles) . After I have selected a name to look at, when I click back to the main list it just comes up 'Page Expired' and I cannot return to the main list. Twice today I have gone through over 5,000 names, only to have to return to the beginning to start all over again. As you can imagine, this quickly becomes very frustrating!! Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong? Have never had any problem like this in the past. HELP!! Rob of Portsmouth
Hello list Responding to Cassy's 'roll call', here are my interests in case anyone out there has a connections BURLEY family - in early 1800s Quarry Bank, then Cradley Heath/Rowley Regis and finally to Smethwick in WW1 era WEBB - Emanuel b. approx 1860, married Sarah Jane BASTABLE, both of Langley. They had 3 children. Arthur (married Elsie ? and emigrated to Bellmore/Sydney Australia). Frank (twice married with daughter Madge) and John (my grandfather). GRIFFIN - John Charles b. approx 1890s Smethwick, otherwise very little known. Any information most welcome Rob G Halesowen
My 3 x gr. grandfather was Thomas TORR, born 1803-07 in England, possibly Warwickshire. If anyone is researching this surname, please contact me. He was living in Ontario, Canada as of the 1840's. Shari in Ohio
Hi Rob, I think the LDS changed the search method a couple of months ago. Instead of going back each time you want to look at the results page click on "Search Results" which is on the left above the name you looking at and it takes you back. For example I just tried to look for Louisa Lee - I filled in all the boxes and this took me to the results page, I clicked on the first Louisa and she wasn't the right one so to go back I clicked on Search Results which took me back to all the Louisa Lees. Also if you want to refine your search without keying all the information back in again click on "Refine Search" which is on the top right of the results page. I hope this helps, Judy -----Original Message----- From: PhllRb@aol.com [mailto:PhllRb@aol.com] Sent: 05 March 2006 17:10 To: ENG-BLACK-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [B.C.] Familysearch Hi, I have just started having problems with familysearch. Phil, the LDS site only lets you search upto 5000 surnames, after that is shuts off, I know I have tried it. All best wishes from Linda.
Cassy: Rounds Fold in Oldbury was on the west side of Park Lane, immediately south of the Seven Stars bridge over the canal. It's now under the M5. Doreen: It's hard to tell, I think, as many occupations of that time can be misleading. For example, my ancestor Benjamin PASSMORE, who died in Misers Row in 1849 was an "engineer". But this didn't mean what it does today, it just meant he looked after a stationary engine, probably a pump for a coal mine. Similarly, a female servant in a working class family was often just a niece who needed feeding. Your miner who employed 25 men would have been a "butty-miner". The butty system, which was widespread in the Black Country, involved one miner leasing part of a mine for a period of time from the mine owner. He then worked it himself and with other miners (whom he paid) and he sold the coal they all produced. So not at all a conventional employer, but admittedly not the lowest of the low. Perhaps I should keep a more open mind after all! Hi: I didn't say earlier, but Misers Row wasn't a conventional street going off the main road, but a terrace along the main road and set back from it. It's interesting that so many of us on the list seem to have had relatives there, as it wasn't a very large place. No family links that I'm aware of, but funny to think they must all have known one another. Probably some even shared the same loo. It certainly sounds the sort of place where only the poorest of the poor lived. Hi Paul I also have a BROWN family living in Misers Row, West Bromwich. Timothy Brown who was a Gardener and his wife was Sarah nee Hudson. Their daughter Alice Jane Brown was born there in March 1851. Thanks for saying where it was. Helps to slot another piece into the jigsaw. They moved to Wednesbury soon after. Gay Smallwood
Hi Gwynne Thank you so much for your kind offer. This is very much appreciated. There are a couple of lookups if that is ok. I am looking for the WATERHOUSE family of Oldbury living in Langley. I am trying to find out who the parents of THOMAS WATERHOUSE born Oldbury 1828 would be and who his siblings were. I suspect that Thomas's father could have been JAMES WATERHOUSE born Oldbury c1805. I have found James Waterhouse on the 1851 census but as Thomas married a Rachel Adams in 1848 he had obviously left home by 1851, so have been unable to tie them up. I am hoping that one of his siblings may have been a JAMES WATERHOUSE born Oldbury c1836. They could very well be living in the Titford Lane area as this is where they turn up on the census's after 1851. The other lookup I would be grateful for is as to who the occupants of WARLEY HALL/ABBEY at Warley Woods would have been in 1841. I am not sure whether this would come under WARLEY WIGORN or WARLEY SALOP in 1841. I am hoping that this would have been a HUBERT JOHN BARCLAY GALTON born 1789 at Duddeston , Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire. His wife would be MARY GALTON nee BARCLAY born CLAPHAM, MIDDLESEX. Children would be MARY BARCLAY GALTON born 1816 at Duddeston, Warwickshire, JULIA THERESA GALTON born 1825 at Warley Abbey. The Galton's may have left Warley Abbey by 1841, as I know they left soon after the death of one of their daughter's Diana Erminia Galton in 1840. But would be interested to know who moved into the Abbey after they left, as the estate remained in the hands of the Galton family until early 1900's as they leased the Abbey out to various families after their departure. I am not related to the GALTON family but am doing a project with the children at my daughters' school on the history of the GALTON family and the history of Warley Woods, Warley Abbey and it's various occupants, as this is the centenary celebration year of Warley Woods becoming a people's park in 1906. The only census year I am missing is 1841 to complete the information I have so far found. I have all the census returns for Warley Abbey now from 1851-1901 for the children to use with their project. Any information you are able to give would be most welcome and very much appreciated. Thank you for your time and trouble. Best regards Gay Smallwood
