Fanny was quite common in Victorian times. On one of the lists I came across a marriage where a Mr Tickell had married a girl called Fanny. She must have thought a great deal of him to have agreed to change her name! Paul, Are you descended from Henry MARTIN and Maria WHITEHOUSE, married at Tipton 27 Feb 1826? It's a possibility that she is a sister of my Abraham WHITEHOUSE, but only if they are children of Jesse WHITEHOUSE and Mary GUTTRIDGE - something I have not been able to determine. > Although i have not posted very often here are my interests > > MARTIN - Walsall, West Bromwich, Tipton > ... > WHITEHOUSE - Believe to be Tipton Paul Whitehouse, Maryland, USA -- Researching Black Country names: WHITEHOUSE, DAVIS, LEES, SPITTLE, SMALL, DITHERIDGE, BEDDOW, TAYLOR, ASTON, ATTWOOD, RICHARDS, PEERS, WRIGHT. David, I have two Sidaway connections, Thomas born about 1769 either in Cradley Worcs or Cradley Heath Staffs, the baptism was in Rowley Regis but he died in Cradley, so I am not exactly sure where he lived. Also have another Thomas born about 1794 Lye Old Swinford, do either of these connect with you? All best wishes from Linda.
A good place to look for names is here, http://www.whatsinaname.net/ It did start out for Forenames in Scotland but are adding other names. It also gives meanings, Pet names and Abbreviations of names. Hi David, Obviously the location is right. Could you have another look at the dates. I don't know of a James Edward S. However if you have a look I might be able to eliminate possible common ancestors. Presently William and his children are NOT common ancestors but there remain Samuel and Joel to examine in detail. Cheers Roger. DvWoodall@aol.com wrote: >Hi Roger, > >I know it's a long shot but a cousin of mine married a James Edward SIDAWAY >(always known as "Ted"). I have a ggf William Sidaway in Quarry Bank. He was born 1843 and married Caroline Hazelhurst. They had 3 children, Gertrude, Howard and Horace. His father was Samuel Sidaway b 1799, in turn Samuel was son of Joel Sidaway b1764 All these Sidaways lived in Bower Lane, Quarry Bank( ? Joel). Samuel and William were spade and shovel makers. Joel was a "Furnace man". I have further data on their offspring. I speculate that his was a small operation hand forging small items from billets from which his sons acquired their skills and specialized in spades Caroline Hazelhurst was a milliner and William became a haberdasher after marriage. Shop was in QB High Street. He died and left the business to Horace who crashed it. Horace's younger son Arthur died in 1990 approx and left no children. I have data on the decendents of Horace and Gertrude. Howard appeared to die early. It is the usual clogs to clogs tale. The zenith appears to be William who became a prominent figure in Quarry Bank. I have much of his personal history in original docs. He was a bon viveur. I have a menu from the Royal Oak QB of the QB Tradesmans Association, (Chairman WS). The food and wines would do Gordon Ramsey credit. Gertrude married Fred Grosvenor of QBand had one daughter Beryl Ivy. I am indebted to Dorothy Walker and J Langdell for much of my data. Hope we can find some links Roger Thompson.

Hi Roger, I know it's a long shot but a cousin of mine married a James Edward SIDAWAY (always known as "Ted"). He was born in Stourbridge on 6 Aug 1936 and died there on 4 Oct 1901. Regards, David in Brierley Hill
