Hello Bob Very early Census 1801, 1811, 1821, 1831 were more or less just statistics. Looking at the ones I have for COOPER in Bloxwich, Walsall at the time of the 1801 Census it listed the name of the head of household, his occupation, how many males were in the house and how many females. The 1821 Census I found in Wednesbury for BURCOTT gave me 1house, 1 family, the name of the head of the household Henry Burcott then 2 males under 5 years, 1 males between 10 & 15 yrs. 1 male between 40 & 50yrs 1female between 5 & 10yrs 1 female between 30 & 40 yrs. very limited info' but it did help a little. The 1831 ones I found at Walsall (again for Cooper)had columns for Inhabited House, How many families in the house. How many trades in that building How many Males How many females, Total in house, The number of Males upward of 20years. The 1841 was the first one of any real value to researchers although it didn't give relationships or the towns where people were born. The adult ages were listed into rounded DOWN groups of 5.If the age was given as 15 it meant someone was aged 15 to 19 years. 20yrs meant they were 20 to 24 and so on. Does that help you? I do not have any 1841 census for Bilston so I am sorry I cannot help with that one. Does Bilston come into Wolverhampton Archives area? If it does you might find something of interest at www.wolverhampton.gov.uk/archives Best of luck Pat.
Hello Bob The dates of birth and baptism for George & Abigail and George & Sarah COOPER's children were in the Registers of the Bilston Independent Chapel, Oxford Street, Bilston. Do >>they round adults age to nearest decade?<< Bob, despite the various things that people say, and I am sure they are very well informed, the truth of the 1841 census, as I have found it to be (and the other years for that matter) is that there is no "uniforming" of rounding up or down, it seems to have depended much on what the enumerator wanted to do that particular day, or even on that particular entry, and it also depened on the information he was given, much of that was guess work, or even lies LOL (ladies hiding thier real ages/bigamous marriages/illigitimates) I guess, we have to look at ourselves now, how do we react to completing the censuses? most people think they ask too many questions, ( i personally always answer 2 questions fascisiously LOL "SEX" and "RACE", I answer "yes please" and "Human" !!) and a lot of people have things they don't want recording on censuses, take that back to 1841, and people then were almost terrified of the enumerator LOL and wanted to impress him, wanted to show they knew their names, ages etc when most of them didn't have a clue! So, if you are pretty sure you have found one of your rellies, but thier age is fluctuating, but other factors lead you to believe they are "yours" GO WITH IT see where it leads! there's always a 50/50 chance you are right!! and they are pretty good odds LOL I have one that is 50 on one census, but only 56 on the next one! one is 56 on one census but only 47 on the next!!!! If everyone was "rounded up or down" they would all be aged in 5's and 10's!! go with what your "genealogy gut feeling" tells you and let somebody else DISPROVE IT LOL (saves you the legwork!) you will find your "GGF" works pretty well as a radar for finding your own!! We used to use this as a skipping rope song. Two people would swing the rope and you had to run in when your name was called and then out when they said Stafford Jail. If you got tangled in the rope then you replaced one of the turners.
