According to my Bilston born husband, who's rellies still live there, it's a no. Gaye Can anyone tell me anything about the 'Boat Builders Arms', Oxford Street, Bilston. One of my rellis (a woman) was the publican there on the 1901 Census. Is it still there or has it long gone. Rita ==== ENG-BLACK-COUNTRY Mailing List ====

This is not to suggest that anyone's ancestor *was* a reformed poacher, but if the shoe fits... Hi You will find records of Gamekeepers in Quarter Sessions Records at the County Record Office. My ancestor was a gamekeeper in Northamptonshire. I contacted the Archivist at the Northants RO and she sent me all that they had onfile for him. For a fee of course. I was very pleased with the result. It told me who his employers were and gave places and dates. I have a barely legible letter stating that my EDGE family came from a small, place named SPOCH, near COLDVILLE in Leicestershire.. I suspect the spellings are incorrect, but does something like Spoch ring a bell with anyone? My gggrandfathjer, John Edge, was born 1814 or 1815, and entered Canada in 1832. He was identified as a farmer. I hope someone can help me.. Donald Edge in Cherry Hill, New Jersey USA
Has far has I know the only gamekeepers I did know worked for the big houses , never self employed and yes I would say some of the poachers would call themselves that on census , they did the same thing but what they did was illegal but most poachers did it to feed there family who where hungry so who blames them Cassy ----- Original Message ----- From: <Jillybrenin@aol.com> To: <ENG-BLACK-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 22, 2006 10:43 PM Subject: [B.C.] Gamekeepers please > > Hi list > Does anyone know please if Gamekeepers were self employed (like > journeymen) > or always worked for "the big house" or more likely to be up market names > for > poachers ? > > I am tracking the" Game Keeper " Henry Parker who lived at Little Huncote, > Thurlaston in 1881 and am curious about the occupation. > > Apart from my mother hiding "Lady Chatterleys Lover" in her knitting bag, > I > have not encountered them before !! > Clues appreciated > Thanks > Jilly > > > > ==== ENG-BLACK-COUNTRY Mailing List ==== > The B.C. Cheers [or perhaps I'd better say Tarar!] <XLVBG> Phil Mellie, would you care to add a few words? <snigger> -- Phil & Anne Irons, Sydney, Nova Scotia Remember: Professionals built the Titanic; an Amateur built the Ark!
Definitely not an upmarket name for a poacher. Gamekeepers would be employed by the owner of a big house or estate to breed and protect game from poachers. Here in Scotland it could also include stalking deer and caring for the River. In other words he was the professional on hand to help the owner and his guests when they wanted to go shooting or fishing. . Incidentally here in Thurso the college run degree courses in Gamekeeping. Ted
Sorry, missed the subject off. Hi Jilly, Knew there was something on these lines, but had to look it up: An Act of 1710 allowed the Lord of the Manor to appoint a Gamekeeper (with authority to kill game on the manor) whose name had to be registered with the Clerk of the Peace. One of mine worked for Lord Spencer in Northants and he had a written appointment. On the back it was endorsed by the local Clerk of the Peace. I found this document in the Northants Record Office, so it might be worth checking the local County R.O, if that's any help. Rita

Hi Jilly, my great grandfather was gamekeeper to Lord Halifax in Yorkshire and as far as I know all gamekeepers were employed by landowners. Also note that your HENRY PARKER was gamekeeper in Thurlaston. Is that in Leicestershire? I have a Henry Parker son of my 4th great grandfather in Smisby, Leicestershire. Just wondering? Yorkie
The only major fair held in the BC is on 9th April at Dunstall Racecourse. Wolverhampton, 10 - 5. Free car parking and a cafe onsite, even a bar if you fancy a pint.
