    3. The comment about formal adoption being a comparatively new concept is true, but if you are lucky you might find mention of informal adoption in a baptismal register. At the church I attend here in Scotland there is an entry in the Baptism Register which reads "I feel it is important to record that Mr & Mrs A are the adoptive parents of the child, the natural father Mr B having given the child into the care of Mr & Mrs A following the death of his wife in childbirth. signed William Lumsden Walker (Priest)" Obviously I have not shown the names of the parties, but I am sure if anyone who was a descendent came and asked they would be shown the register. 1. Re: [B.C.] James Bridge Cemetery, Darlaston query
    2. It is certainly worth a look at Kew, if you can get someone to do a search. Not all the records are burnt or missing. I found a very full account of my grandfather (although I was lucky) together with a brother, a cousin and (I think) a nephew. It sounds as though he would have had a (small) pension if he did indeed die of his wounds. You have the Regiment and his Service No (although he may well have had more than one number during the course of the war). Did he have any brothers or cousins that you might be able to identify? Personally, I think that you are in with a better than average chance at Kew. It is the first world war medal index which is available on-line, rather than the service records, but they do not give much information beyond the information you already have and don't give next of kin. As Fiona says, the service records are at Kew but are far from being complete, thanks to German incendiary bombs falling on the War Office record store where they were kept in 1940. The records are in two series - one for the burnt documents and one for pensions files which were kept to help supplement the lost files - on microfilm and not indexed but arranged in a rough alpha order. Looking through them can be a real pain, especially as you are never sure that the records are going to be there or have just been misfiled. Sorry to pour cold water on the idea but I think the idea of someone doing the search for you is a bit unlikely, especially with a common name like Bates and only an initial for a first name. I think you might be better looking for obituary notices for him in the local paper; they can sometimes be a mine of useful genealogical information. The adoption register is a separate register. The indexes to it (at the FRC) are also in a separate section. If you apply for a certificate from the Adopted index you will not find any reference on the certificate to the orignal name. Bear in mind that formal adoption is a comparatively recent concept (post 1900?). But it could be worth a look in the Adopted index. Other possibilites (with separate registers) are: born overseas (expat), military, Scotland, Ireland My own approach to the seemingly intractable problem of a missing Birth Regisration (c. 1843) was eventually to get the siblings either side from Census info (I had to wait for a new census to be published!) and then track the siblings, both of whom were registered. If you are not too far from London, treat yourself to a day out. A day's research at the FRC, possibly a day when an interesting lecture is being given, and a visit to the theatre or show in the evening. 3. Yorkie: There isn't really such a thing as a known name, nor a known date - and you need both to find a birth registration. There are various possible reasons why you can't find someone where you *know* they ought to be in the indexes, for example: - The person's real date of birth was different from what you think; - The birth was registered in the quarter after the event (or even later); - The person's name at birth was different from what you've been told - The person was illegitimate and registered under the mother's maiden name - There's been a transcription error at some stage between the registration of the birth and the GRO indexes. Most people are actually there in the GRO records - somewhere. 3. Hi folks Does some kind soul out there have access to the James Bridge Cemetery in Darlaston or details of the War Dead buried there? I'm trying to find more details of a T.BATES who is buried there. According to the Commonwealth War Graves site he was a Private of the 26th Battalion King's Liverpool Regiment. Service number 406664 and he was buried there on the 6 Feb 1921. The Grave reference is D134. What I'm trying to find is if there are any more details such as next of kin etc. Any help would be most appreciated Ian Ian, last time I had a walk around there, the CW graves, that I looked at were the standard white ones with just the name and date and regiment info, no next of kin, I dont have a plan of the cemetary, so cant go looking for you, I am too time challenged I am sorry, but I am taking my car to the jet wash close by so will have a quick look for you later today. the records for the cemetary are held at Walsall history centre, they might be able to help. james Bridge is the border of walsall and darlaston, where is your guy from? it could be a couple of areas in walsall or that side of darlaston. you can have a look at where the cemetary is on streetmap, the street to put in is bentley mill way, the cemetary itself is, beleive it or not in cemetary road! BUT there are lots of cemetary roads LOL so look for bentley mill way, cemetary at one end, me just a bot further off the other LOL actually here is the link, the cemetary is bottom right of the map, I am the other side of wolverhampton road, top middle. http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=398929&y=298260&z=1&sv=bentley+mill+way&st=6&tl=Bentley+Mill+Way,+Walsall,+WS2&searchp=newsearch.srf&mapp=newmap.srf Mellie How Come My Coat Of Arms Has Buckles At The Back?
