Hi All, Sometime past, there was an interest in DNA use in genealogy. LIster Nancy Averill listed some sites that have an important bearing on this subject. Thanks to Nancy. In 2004, I participated in the SORENSON PROJECT, their url is lsited below. This is a non-profitmaking organisation in USA, and to get a feel of how to prepare a sample of your DNA, they will send you a free kit for taking a sample from the the mouth. You receive full instructions, a form to fill in with your details, a container for the sample, and a pre-paid envelope for sending back to the States, so, there is no cost to you. However, PLEASE NOTE, they do not provide a complete DNA Mapping of the results; they place an analysis of the results in their data base. Once the results are in the data base, you can then get information about yourself on-line. If you want a complete map of your DNA, then you can go to a number of outlets, both UK and USA, who will charge you for the service. Sorenson, are currently offering a coupon to obtain a discount from an American Testing Laboratory, RELATIVE GENETICS, and the url below will take you to their product/price page. I believe this is an important and cutting edge technology to aid my research into my family line and pedigree.I have been in contact with my namesake in USA, Dr. Dennis Garvey, of Washington State University, and he has given me valuable advice and information, including information that shows I am related to the GARVEYs of County Mayo/Roscommon, Ireland. Please note, I have no connection with either Sorenson or Relative Genetics, except that I am in the Sorenson Data base, for my research and am currently considering a complete testing. Best regards and hope this helps. >> For the rest of April, the List theme is "what did my ancestors do and where did they work".<<< Look, its 08.00 am and I am waiting for emulsion to dry humour me OK LOL My MORAN Line, came to Brimingham from Ireland, finding the births of my great grandmother and her siblings is a nightmare, they just don't seem to be on the GRO LOL my great great grandfather Patrick was a labourer, but my great granma worked in Hockley, the jewellery quarter she made gold chains. got a pic of her wearing a double heart brooch, I figured she made it herself, it doesn't look quite "even", so my mother (bless her cotton socks) promptly produced the brooch LOL and its hand made for sure!! My GREEN Line are from around Solihull, they were brass founders, the younger generations made intricate brass works, or were draughtsmen (architectural) my Great grandfather was a scale beam maker (journeyman) in the Jewellery Quarter, I guess he liked the double heart brooch too cos he married the maker LOL They moved to Willenhall, he became an Oil stove dresser, must have been more money or something cos its a real change of direction! their female children worked at "stokes's" in Walsall, in castings, (got 2 beautiful figurines my granma made and took home to her mom, the little tea leaf LOL!) the eldest dau married a guy who worked for a bank and they emigrated to the US, the second dau married a guy who was a road tester for Sunbeam motor bikes just off Goldthorn Hill Wolverhampton, have seen him on TV when there did a story on Sunbeam!! the youngest dau, my granma, LOL well she leads right into the wayward Women thread ROTFL on her way to work she had to walk past Smith's Flour Mill, and this guy there whistled her every morning, yeah the guy from the previous email LOL she became Mrs BLEWITT much to the annoyance of her mother in law LOL but my granma wated him and she got him ! sounds familiar to me that does ROTFL My granma, I only found out recently, had an illigitimate child in the 1920's, and her mother (MORAN of the double heart brooch) looked after the baby whilst my granma continued to work, sadly the baby died aged 14 months. So many women would have been disowned at that time, but not my MORAN/GREEN, everything I find out about them tells me they were a closely bonded loving family. The 2 sons of this family, both joined the army, the eldest long before the war, he died of GPI, Yeah that one of emails a while back LOL the other lost a leg in WW1, and his mother (she of the double heart brooch) went with the Salvation Army to France to see him, nurse him and travel back here with him! She was killed during WW2, she was in her 70's, she stepped off a bus late at night and was knocked down by a car! shes my favourite ancestor, my favourite person in history! she loved her family with a passion and was as wayward as hell LOL shes had twinkly eyes and a cheeky smile!! >> For the rest of April, the List theme is "what did my ancestors do and where did they work".<<< I don't neccessarily Know WHERE they worked, but I do know what they did, cos it says so on the censuses LOL My BLEWITTS were from Belbroughton, scythe makers, one line stayed there one line moved to Tipton working in the Iron foundries there as Puddlers, One son emigrated to the US, the other moved to Walsall, still working in Iron, until my grandfather who worked at Smiths Flour Mill on Wolverhampton Road, which at this very moment has scaffolding around it and is being converted into 122 "studio flats" Also in Belbroughton, were my TIMMINGS, Market Gardners, my great great great gandfather right up to the 1891 census just before his death. His son moved to Kings Norton then on To Walsall and was a Market Gardener, His daughter, my great grandmother continued as a Market Gardener, she lived in the cottage by Reedswood Park, a proper roses round the door place! (got a pic of that!) talking to one of my mom friends he remembers my great granma well, his mum used to send him to the cottage to get veg and eggs! he tells me they "fed" the area during the 2nd world war LOL by the time my great Grandmother was living in the Cottage she was Mrs BLEWITT! There is nothing to suggest that the famillies knew each other from Belbroughton but it wasn't that big a place back then! Mellie How Come My Coat Of Arms Has Buckles At The Back?
Does any know Adelaide Street, Brierley Hill in 1940 - 1960's. If anyone stayed in the street they may be able to help? My second Cousin once removed Lynne Jensen stayed in 44 Adelaide Street from about 1945 until she married in 1967. I think Lynne married a Barry Hodgetts in 1967. Her address at marriage was 44 Adelaide Street. Her Mother Phyllis May Holloway Married my cousin Willard Jensen in 1943. Willard is my second cousin and from Canada. Willard died in France in 1944, before Lynne was born. Willard's maternal Grandfather was Harry Johnson from Rowley Regis son of Benjamin Johnson and Mary Ann Parkes. I think Phyllis remarried in 1947 to Harry Lowe. Harry Lowe stayed at 42 Adelaide Street. His father according to the marriage certificate was also Harry Lowe. Phyllis stayed at 44 Adelaide Street. I am trying to see if any of the family are in the area as I have made contact with Lynne's cousins who are in the US and they were asking about Willard's family in the UK Regards Fiona Caskey.

Dave, I know nothing about the ill fated trip to Brazil all I have is a line in the Bible that says "Arrived in Philadelphia 20 Feb 1870 from Brazil" I've checked ship records for1869-70-71 but can not fine the record. Would be very interested in the records of this Brazilian trip. One other line in the Bible is the birth record of "Patrick Atlantic Ocean Murphy born 10 April 1868 on board the ship and died. St. Mary's Ch is actually the second RC church to be built here. The first (built 1852) virtually fell down, the second which is still standing and doesn't look too bad with its' copper spire was built in 1872. I'll try to find an illustration of the original St. Mary's, I haven't got a photograph of it. I will send separately a pic of the current 1872 Ch. The Presbytery however, is the original 1852 version, that didn't fall down, will find something about that. If they married in September 1858 the Priest would have been Fr. George Montgomery an ex-Anglican Irishman. His first ministry was at Kenilworth. Fr. Montgomery was the man who may have inadvertantly been the cause of so many BC folk ending up in PA (USA) via Brazil. Will write to the list about what happened and why later. Chris I remember well Midland Tar Distillers in Oldbury, opposite the Broadwell Works of several companies in the Tube Investments Group. When I was a teenager I went for an interview at Midland Tar, the position of Shipping Clerk was vacant, but I didn't get the job! Regrettably, this company went the way of many others and no longer exists, their office now a Sikh Temple and the factory a modern trading estate, all of this below the elevated section of the M5 motorway. Hi List, Can anyone tell me what is at 284 Bloomfield, Tipton? Is it housing or a business, or has it been torn down and replaced? Are there any photographs of that area available? Thanks Nancy
