    3. I tried a few generic searches and get plenty of results for the years 1851 through 1901 but nothing is showing up for 1841. Wouldn't it make sense to be able to specifically select 1841 like you can for all the other years or hasn't the 1841 been officially released yet? I see no mention of it anywhere on the Ancestry site. 2. An Earthquake ...On Wednesday night last, about five minutes before eleven o`clock, a shock of an earthquake was sensibly felt in this town. The shock was so violent that we are informed a party of gentlemen in the Potteries had their table so shaken as to overtrun and break the glasses...Sattordshire Advertiser,Nov 21 1795. For some reason this just a smile to my face. steve

    1. Occupation
    2. Came across an entry on the 1901 Census for Albert James PARROTT born c.1872 in Rowley Regis as a Superintendent of Travellers. His parents, Edward and Margaret PARROTT, were both teachers and Albert had married Elizabeth BEASLEY (b.1873) who was also from Rowley Regis. Elizabeth's father was a GP in Rowley Regis, so the whole bunch look to be pretty middle class. Has anyone come across Albert's occupation - Superintendent of Travellers and can tell me what this entails. Rita

    3. In re Cassie's comment about not being allowed to see her cert til it was mailed: I requested a rellies death info from a City Hall here in the States. I did "fib" and say that the guy I wanted was my Great Grandfather- as I had already run into the "If they are not related to you- and how exactly do they KNOW???-- you can't get the info"-- well from some states anyways. So- the person on the other end of the phone told me that as the person on the cert was listed as "single" it was therefor impossible for him to be my Great Grandfather! Gee I wonder what school yard she was hanging out in when I was learning the "Facts of Life"? LOL! And after I received a wedding cert from England for my Great Great Great Grandparents I went to the local Staples Copy Shop and tried to have it laser copied. I was told that it was "Copyright" and there for I could not have it copied! I pointed out that the cert was dated 1869 and surely the people it was referring to were long dead- and if they were NOT I have a few questions for them!!!!--- and this moved them not a bit. A friend who happened to work at the shop took me aside and told me to go to the local Kinko's which had a self serve copier that used the laser tech. A few minutes later I was the proud possessor of several very nice color copies. No one paid any attention to what I was copying!!!! In New York you practically have to give your genetic info to get a copy of a cert etc but in New Jersey no one seems to much care and they give you all the info you need very willingly. In Pennsylvania they refused at first to send me the birth and death certs for my mothers sister as I was not closely related enough! I wrote back and explained that I needed the info to settle an estate and I was the ONLY relative left standing and got the info right away. Amazing. A funny- sort of- I called to find out who all was buried in a family grave in New Jersey- having discovered a total of 16 people buried in the Birmingham side of the family plot--- and the woman on the phone told me that the grave would hold four- and would I be needing the grave anytime soon? I guess what they were asking was if ANYONE in the family was being buried but some how I heard it as : Are YOU planning to use it anytime real soon???? Creepy! But funny when you think about it. And I had never really thought about asking to be buried there in any case but now- well you never know. I do agree that I would not want my kids- all born during or after 1984- to find that their birth certs etc were avail to the general public. Anyone could use that info for a false passport or identity theft couldn't they? judith in New York

    3. >>All of this information is and has been freely available to anyone who >>cared to search for it in local RO's, sometimes local libraries and the FRC for very many years. Anyone who wanted to do naughty stuff could do it anyway whether the information is available online or not.<< indeed, if someone wants to "do you " in the identity theft way they will, having been a victim many years ago I know how much it stings and for how long!!!!! and I agree that it makes a mockery of the data protection act, and that the 1911 census should be available NOW LOL >> I have had this problem with Genes Reunited, I have emailed them lots of times asking for my living family members to be taken off their database, they just ignore my emails, I never get a reply. It wasn't me who gave them the names by the way, they got on there from someone else's data base.<< I emailled the list a few weeks ago on this very subject, and indeed it was GR that I was referring to, although I didn't use its name, my email, referred to the fact of people with whom our trees had been shared, due to family connection and them putting ALL the info from it onto sites like this, without regard to the fact that some people may not appreciate it at all!! >>This is slightly more direct than 1837 (or the equivalent Ancestry >>facility) in that the search result displays the actual information where as 1837 just aims you at possible images. I agree being a pay site does help stopping for example normal search engines finding the data, but as far as I know they don't vet anybody joining up. I may be being unduly sensitive about this but it seems to me that the aggregating of web base information from multiple sites is a potential concern in these days of identification theft and also given the recommended publication of information re children. I have for example just moved my family tree and some photos from being publicly available to needing a password on my family web site<< I dont think you are being unduly sensitive, and I congratualte you on removing your tree from public view to password view, at least you can decide fully who views the tree. 3. Steve: > If someone is listed in the census as living on their own means would this > be what i understand as someone who is living on "means" as in means > tested[hope thats not a daft question] There were no state benefits and therefore no means tests as we now understand them in Victorian times, just the Workhouse. In fact it means almost exactly the opposite of that. It's someone who lives off a private income from investments. Best wishes Paul Prescott

    3. Linda You have to click on the person in question, then on the info screen there is a delete option click that. If you have many members in that side of your tree you may have to delete them one at a time until you get to the one you want, and when you delete the one you want you have to put the others all back. It's a long job but it's worth it Ray
