    2. I remember very well going to see Santa at Lewis's. But I think it might have been a scam. My (older) sister told me once that it wasn't the real Santa. 3. Ex-Servicemen used to do the same outside the Gt. Western Arcade (opposite Snow Hill station Birmingham) and down by the Queens Hotel at New Street (I think that Clark Gable stayed there for a time before being stationed at RAF Cosford) amongst many other places, within living memory. "Box of vestas mate?" I will always remember that they usually wore their medals, and more often than not, had a limb or two missing. Anyone remember the hot chestnut/potato sellers back then? They used coal/coke, gave a much better taste than the gas things that they use these days. 3. Hi All, This morning my young Labrador was trying to get me to play with her while I was doing something far more important, when I suddenly remembered a saying that seemed right for the occasion. The saying was "Go and sell your matches", meaning stop bothering me and go away and do something else. My wife and I can both remember our parents using the expression when we were growing up, when we were making a nuisance of ourselves when growing up. Does anyone else remember the saying or does anyone know the origin of the saying, and was it only used in the BC? John

The Friends of Dudley Archives & Local History Service have transcribed the baptisms, marriages & burials from 1844 - 1901 on CD and in book form if you are interested - just a little "plug" here:-) Regards Jean > Can someone tell me the name of the Parish Church in Netherton around 1850. > Ta Doreen

    1. Wolverhampton Cemeteries-help!
    2. Marlene Jackson
    3. Once again I am calling on the list members for assisstance. I have been trying to find the resting place of my ancestors BATES for over 15 years now. I thought that since it was such an unusual monument (eight graves, all pointing to one centre- an octagon) that surely someone who has visited cemeteries in Wolverhampton would have noticed it. I have not found a site where all the cemeteries are transcribed (which makes it so much easier to find someone here), so do not know in which cemetery they were buried. If anyone has ever seen this monument, or can give some advice, I would love to hear from you. TIA Marlene Jackson Ontario, Canada
