    3. Hi Cassy I've only just caught up on this thread, because I've been away on holiday. The school was indeed Tabernacle School, but it was in Talbot Street. The pub nearby was the Old Talbot. I remember the area before it was redeveloped as the Savacentre as, as a child, I used to go shopping in Oldbury with my Great Aunt, who would always point out the various streets to me as part of teaching me about my family (my great great grandfather/mother had lived in both Talbot and Tabernacle Street in the 1870 and 1880s). As I understand it, the school took pupils from 5-14. You should find more interesting stuff in the book Old Time Oldbury, which was published quite a few years ago now (I have an original copy), but through the joys of the internet is now available online. Try this link http://historyofoldbury.co.uk/Oldtime%20Oldbury.pdf In the late 1920s my mom lived at 4 Stone Street with my great gransfather/mother and a few of her aunts. I'm afraid I don't have any photos of Stone Street at that time, but if you find any, then I'd love to see them (as would my mom!). 2. Looking for some guidance on a birth location. If someone's birthplace was given as Colwich on one census and then later as "Heywood" (Great Haywood?), would that possibly be the same person, or am I looking at two people with the same name? Seeing Double, Lois

    1. [Black Country] Tipton Pubs
    2. trevor flavell
    3. Hi I'm trying to find photographs of two Tipton pubs and hope someone out there has a snap-shot or two in their archives. First is the "Union Inn" in Union Street Tipton. This still exists (sadly not as a pub) but has been disfigured. I guess the building is 1920's. i have a cousin who married into the Gamble family who ran it for years but they have no photos either. Second is round the corner in Canal Street, "The Barrel". This is an older pub but the area was redeveloped in the late 1960's when much of Tipton was vandalised by the mindless planners of Sandwell. The Barrel was run by the Walker family and sat between the Vicarage and Canal Street Methodist New Connection Chapel (which was also bulldozed). I've made contact with Tony Hitchmouth who published a collection of pubs on CD but although he's got one photo of the Union I just can't trace any of the Barrel so any help would be greatly appreciated. 3. Hope I am doing this reply correctly-apologies if I am not. Savercentre Oldbury was built on the old Tabernacle Street site and I am almost sure the School had the same name, because my Father went there as he was born in Tabernacle Street. 3. Well done Cassy and everyone else who signed the petition to remember this wonderful man and his outstanding bravery. There was an article in the Stourbridge News on 1st May 2009 about Frank receiving a posthumous honour http://www.stourbridgenews.co.uk/news/4336047.Frank_Foley_to_receive_posthumous_honour/ Maggie ======================================== Message Received: Jun 27 2009, 03:10 AM From: "cassy" To: [email protected] Cc: Subject: [Black Country] GOVERMENT ANSWER non gem Hi All I thought some of you might me interested in this Some time ago I signed a petition for the bravely in World War Two of Frank Foley Who lived at Stourbridge He was a spy in the war and helped save the lives of many Jews throw his job has a Diplomat in Berlin He was never honoured for this has he should of been, how many more Jews would of been murdered but for his bravely This is a reply I got today off the government Petition: “May 7th 2008 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Frank Foley, a British spy who used his role as passport control officer at the British Embassy in Berlin to rescue thousands of Jewish people from the Holocaust. While Frank Foley received a CMG for his service as a diplomat, and has been recognised as ‘Righteous The Government believes that it is entirely right to recognise the contribution of those British citizens who showed extraordinary acts of courage during the Second World War in helping many Jews and other persecuted groups to escape from the evils of the holocaust. During his visit to Auschwitz in April this year, the Prime Minister was very proud to announce a new award of recognition for the extraordinary acts of courage for these courageous people. The Prime Minister said: ‘We will create national awards in Britain for those British citizens who helped so many people, Jewish and other citizens, during the Holocaust period’. ‘Their families and the Holocaust Educational Trust have been campaigning to bring these British Holocaust heroes to public attention and I am delighted that we will be able to honour their sacrifice and service in this way.’ Discussions have taken place across Government to examine a number of options, and we have concluded that there is a way forward, outside the Honours System. The Department of Communities and Local Government will discuss the precise nature of the award with the Holocaust Educational Trust and other interested parties, and seek the views of the families in considering the best way forward to create this national award. 3. Hi All I thought some of you might me interested in this Some time ago I signed a petition for the bravely in World War Two of Frank Foley Who lived at Stourbridge He was a spy in the war and helped save the lives of many Jews throw his job has a Diplomat in Berlin He was never honoured for this has he should of been, how many more Jews would of been murdered but for his bravely This is a reply I got today off the government Petition: “May 7th 2008 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Frank Foley, a British spy who used his role as passport control officer at the British Embassy in Berlin to rescue thousands of Jewish people from the Holocaust.
