    2. Gill, thank you very much for the links. Unfortunately, the Calendar of Prisoners for Staffordshire is in a file form my computer refuses to open. If anyone can access that file for me, I am looking for Thomas Baggott, born 1844. He died in Stafford Prison on 19 March 1885. He appears in the prison in 1871, but I don't know if he had a continuous stay or was a repeat "guest". I'd love to know what he did and if he was a frequent prisoner or had one major offense. I have his death certificate. He is listed as a coal miner. He died of congestion of the lungs. He was single. Hoping for Help, Lois -----Original Message----- From: Bucki <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Fri, Jul 24, 2009 4:45 am Subject: [Black Country] york prison site Hi Lois, have you seen this site? http://uk-transcriptions.accessgenealogy.com/ROMASTER.xls( hope the link works) It gives a huge amount of information on the calendar of prisoners at Stafford jail. if this doesn't work try http://uk-transcriptions.accessgenealogy.com/index.html then select 'Staffordshire', and 'Staffs calender of Prisoners'. regards Gill ------------------------------------- The only List that specifically covers the whole of the Black Country. 3. Hi Can anyone help with information about a branch of the COX family who lived in Brook Street Wall Heath? Thomas Powell COX (b1871) married May FLAVELL (b1890) in 1925 in Dudley. I believe they lived in Brook Street and were founder members of a non-conformist church in Wall Heath but which one I'm not sure. Of their children I know of a Donald COX (b926) who became an ordained minister but moved away from the Midlands. They also had a daughter Joyce COX (b1928) but I don't know her married name (I've tried IGI and BMD without any luck). Any help would be greatly appreciated. 3. Hi Lois It's true. For many years suicides were buried at crossroads with a stake through their heart - the last recorded person to be buried in such a way (but without a stake) was Griffiths, buried at the junction of Kings Road, Eaton Street and Grosvenor Place, London at 1.30 am in 1823. In the following year, the practice was abolished by statute, which provided that burial was to be in a churchyard at night but without religious rites. In 1882, suicides were allowed to be burieed in daylight hours. Gruesome or what???? 2. Hi All, Thanks very much to Sandra and Vanessa. A stake through the heart! Wow! I should think the prospect of that alone would deter suicides. And as long as I'm on about burials, what are/have been the laws about how long a grave is owned? And what about babies who were buried with unrelated adults to keep them company? Is that still done? Is/was permission needed from the adult's family? Maybe too curious, Lois -----Original Message----- From: Vanessa Morgan <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Cc: 'Black Country Rootsweb [Black Country]' <[email protected]> Sent: Mon, Jul 20, 2009 6:45 pm Subject: Re: [Black Country] Burial Question Hi Lois It's true. The Fountain Pub now stands on the corner of Owen Street and Factory Road, this I have known since 1930/40's. My query is that it is now known that during the 1920's there was a building standing (attached) to the left of the Fountain, and that then stood on the corner. Hi Cassy Sandwell Archives can be found at http://www.laws.sandwell.gov.uk/ccm/navigation/leisure-and-culture/local-history-and-heritage/community-history-and-archives-service/ You won't find any information on the school on line there - you will need to visit the Archives - next to the Blue Gates Pub in Smethwick. They can probably tell you over the phone if they have any information on the school - the phone number is on their website.
