    1. [Black Country] 1911 census, other sites, parish records
    2. Further to my previous email, I have been advised that there is a subscription available to the 1911 census only [I had not delved into my email and only saw the full subscription details - whoops!]. So, my next question is - what is the best coverage of parish records on various sites like Find My Past and Ancestry? Does anyone have any knowledge in this area please? Or is there a comparison website anywhere? Thanks Carol

    2. In a message dated 27/10/2009 08:23:31 GMT Standard Time, [email protected] writes: I'd like to hear others' comments also on the benefits of find my past over Ancestry. I only renewed my Ancestry sub in August, so will stay with them for at least until next August. Although I will take advantage of the yearly subscription to the 1911 Census on find my past. My basic subscription to Ancestry is due shortly and I, too, have been wondering what to do. Originally I had thought to upgrade to the middle subscription to gain access to pre 1837 records. Does anyone know which is the best site for pre 1837 records as they are my greatest need these days? Also, I was hoping the immigration/emigration records would be on the middle subscription to Ancestry but they are only on worldwide membership at a lot of money. When I look at the invitation I have received for a yearly subscription to 1911 census on Find My Past [with a 20% discount], then I'm looking at the best part of £300 for the two sites. Decisions, decisions! At least it looks like I'm not the only person wondering what to do! I have found links on Ancestry with people who have posted their trees there although in some cases the information is wrong, and most frustratingly, in several instances people have not replied [or maybe not been able to reply for whatever reason], either from a public or private tree. Are there better sites for making contact with people searching the same families? I have a feeling that discussion of commercial sites is frowned on on these lists although I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to know the advantages of each one in order to make a better informed choice. I'll probably end up with my usual subscription and going for short-term on other sites on an "as and when" basis. I would be pleased to receive comments from other folks and if we need to take it off list that's fine. Thanks Carol

    1. [Black Country] Thank You to Jane
    2. I'd like to thank Jane Wettstone for keeping her website up all these years. Jane has organized a genealogy conference here in the U.S. for B.C. descendants, created the site to document and memorialize our reunions, created our birthday and surname lists, and collected Christmas traditions, stories, recipes and songs. She made links to lots of useful sites for B.C. researchers and has been enjoyed by many over the years. Now that we have so many membership changes and the site is not frequently visited, the time seems to have come to close it down. I have copied much of what is on the site if someone needs something from it. A big thank you to Jane for all she has done over the years, including her website. With Appreciation, Lois

    3. Goodmorning, In response to your interest in Thompsons in Brierly Hill, I have the following: Benjamin Thompson who started as an engineer at Round Oak and later owned a hatshop in Brierly Hill High Street. He was also a Butty man for some time. He lived finally in John Street Brockmoor BH. He married Myrah Gill. His Children were Alice, vanished to Australia, Alfred Ernest , Phoebe and "Ginney" . Phoebe married Herbert Clare and ran the Brierly Hill Printing Company, also in High Street BH. Benjamin opened a second shop in Dudley. Ginney married a William (?) Knowles and had one son, also Will. They too lived in John Street. Herbert and Phoebe's son Douglas was killed in the tank battle at El Alamein. Alfred Ernest married Florence Augusta Hickman, daughter of Joseph Hickman and xxx(?) Norwood. (I have the Hickmans back to 1790). They had three children Ernest Hickman Thompson, Marjorie Thompson and Stanley Norwood Thompson ( my father). I have quite a bit of Thompson data back to a speculative 1790-ish John Thompson. 3. I have just re-subscribed to this list after a short break. I am still attempting to find a 'hole in the brick wall' of this branch of my tree. I have traced the name of the person I believe to be that of my great, grandfather Henry through census including the 1911and an electoral roll for 1912. However, try though I may I am unable to find any record of his marriage. Do I just assume he was not married or is it worth seeking the services of a professional researcher to look into this for me. I know the name of his wife as I have a copy of my grandfather's birth certificate and the address on the birth certificate ties in with the address of my great, grandparents on on a copy of the census. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Kerry from Queensland, Australia
