    3. Hi Bryan >>Since i was at gmother's 80th birthday party i at least have the quarter and year<< But don't forget that one had 42 days to register a birth, so that, for example, a birth in mid-November might appear in the index for the March quarter of the following year. But in 1910, when Pensions were first introduced, not everyone entitled had a birth certificate anyway, having been born before 1 Jul 1837, so a baptism certificate was accepted as well, and in many cases the censuses were consulted too, hence the statement at the top of the 1911 Household schedule "The returns are not to be used for proof of age, as in connection with Old Age Pensions..." - just in case people were tempted to record themselves as older than they really were...:-) There are cases of births just not being registered, but more often than not they are there, but lurking somewhere unexpected (especially to those who don't know about the 42 days grace), under a strange mis-spelling (such as YEWBERRY for RUBERY!) or another surname altogether (such as the mother's maiden name). I have been trying to follow this thread, but have been working very long hours this week, so I apologise if I have missed it, but did you actually ever post the details of the person whose birth you were seeking? Kind regards Polly Thanks Bryan Slim ------------------------------------- The only List that specifically covers the whole of the Black Country. 3. Just to add a bit more to this , even thou you where supposed to registrar Births from 1837 England and Wales , Scotland I think I was 1864? and Ireland 1846 Protestant, and Catholic 1864 many people did not it was up to the local registrar to find them , which really was an impossible task unless he knew then , but in the 1870s in became an offence with a fine if they didn't , Sometime in the early 1900s there was a small pension brought out and those who did not have a birth cert or where born before 1837 had to find proof of when they where born to claim pension , those born after 1837 did try and register there birth Cassy Assistant Admin Black Country Potteries, and Wolverhampton Lists ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bryan Slim" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, October 30, 2009 4:10 PM Subject: [Black Country] proof of age for pension > > Hi, all, > > Many thanks for those who offered advice including Albert, Pete and > Lin, Edward, Brenda, Maaisha, Cassy > > Since i was at gmother's 80th birthday party i at least have the > quarter and year > > > > Thanks > > Bryan Slim > > ------------------------------------- > The only List that specifically covers the whole of the Black Country. 3. THIS IS THE MESSAGE FROM THE GOB SITE    I did get the notifications last night around 11pm that bulk comments had been made, as you say there were around 150 plus of them. I attempted to remove the member and their comments to find I had been beaten to it so tar me wench for being so quick off the mark. The Gallery security is tight in order to prevent any malicious damage to the images which is why we could solve the issue pretty much instantly but the forum is even tighter. 1) Each account that is opened has to go through TWO captcha screens. These are the number /letter screens that prove you are human and not an automated spammer. 2) Whilst the account is being set up the IP address is checked against our forum files automatically and also those of an international spam system called stop that spam. If the account is on that list then it is flagged to me and refused entry. 3)IF your account is allowed then your account is flagged as a new account. this is then monitored for a period of time to ensure you are not a spammer/hacker and to see your intentions towards the forum. 4) As a new account there are limits placed on your account such as using PM's, posting signatures, posting images sharing data. 5) For all members and staff there is the automatic spam filter which scans every single post or PM for words or phrases which are logged into the spam filter. If any of these phrases appear then the post is disallowed until it is checked. 6) The forum is automatically backed up each day so that we have a record of the most recent version of the forum and with over 25,000 posts thats no mean feat. It's a sad world when you need to do all of this on just a small community forum but as we all know if we don't we could well end up losing everything so it may be a pain to join us, it may be that your post gets rejected every now and then for something silly and it may be that you fall victim of our forum rules sometimes but in the end it's only here to protect the forum. 3. Going back some years people did not always have a birth certificate.I know of case where a person definitely did not have a birth certificate. This lady knew where she was born and the year 1890. She was due a retirement pension in 1950, but could not produce a birth certificate, so could not claim it. Eventually it was agreed that her birth had not been registered, because in the meantime she had been christened and there were church records, she had been married and had her marriage certificate, she was on the electoral roll, she held a valid identity card and had ration books etc issued during the war, yet officially she did not exist because her father had not registered her birth. Eventually and I think it took about two years a birth certificate was issued retrospectively. Ted
