Hello Listers An Update on Staffordshire FreeREG When I took over as Staffordshire Coordinator for FreeREG I found dozens of files of records which were online, but had not been recorded as such on the STS County page. Therefore, although they were searchable online, no-one knew exactly what was there. Sometime this week the monthly update will be available and these records will now be showing as present - and credit will be given to those transcribers who put in so much hard work. I'll give you the link to the page as there really are too many to go into details here, suffice to say that the following places do have records online - Wolverhampton (many, inc many n.c. churchs), some for Bilston, Ettingshall, Wednesfield, West Bromwich, Willenhall. New records going online this month - Betley 1538 onwards for Baptisms, Burials and Marriages Ellastone 1538 onwards - Ba., Bu., Ma. Gnosall 1572 onwards - Ba, Bu, Ma. Penn 1569 - 1790 - Ba Trentham 1538-1703 Ba, 1612 - 1758 Ma, 1598 -1634 Bu Those new records were the only 'stock' of records Staffordshire held. So now its my job to build up that stock again - any help or suggestions on this will be gratefully received! There's a long way to go! (please reply off list) The response to my plea for volunteer transcribers was so successful, and already I have a wonderful team of people already working on Stoke on Trent Parish Records. They are a great team, and I feel very lucky to be working with them. More new transcribers are currently going through the training process. I'm hoping that shortly we'll be working on many more Donated fiche are always welcome, and if you are interested in becoming a transcriber, for both of these could you contact me off list, so that in the case of fiche etc we can look at copyright. I'll send out an update like this every month and here is the link to our county page which shows a breakdown of the records online http://www.freereg.org.uk/parishes/sts.htm Hope that helps Lesley

Just thought I'd let you all know about a forthcoming GOONS Seminar in the area - and yes I do have to declare an interest as I am one of the speakers, talking about the ROWBERRY yDNA Project, which has already been very successful! Hope to see you there Polly The Guild of One Name Studies is organising a "DNA Developments" seminar at the National Star College, Ullenwood near Cheltenham, from 9.30am on Saturday February 20th 2010. DNA testing is changing the way we are now able to study surnames and the seminar will build on previous DNA discussions with emphasis on practical experience and the interpretation of results. The morning sessions will concentrate on project results and conclusions (looking at four specific surname studies) and consider the implications for surname studies in general. The afternoon sessions will look at the administration process (marketing and promotion, tracking down living relatives to test, fundraising and subsidies, and interpreting group results). The final session will discuss how to run a more effective project. The cost of attending is £18.00 and includes tea/coffee and a light buffet lunch. Full details and a booking form are available on the Guild website www.one-name.org Many thanks, Alan R Moorhouse [Seminar Organiser] Stroud, Gloucestershire [email protected]
Subject: re Volunteers to transcribe Staffordshire Parish Records What a wonderful response!! Many, many thanks to everyone who replied to my email. I've replied to them all off list via email and think that, for the time being I now have enough volunteers to help with transcribing. I'm really excited about the response and am looking forward to us all getting more records online for you all to search. If anyone would like me to keep their name and email address for when more help is needed, then please do get in touch, I'd love to hear from you, as I'm sure that more help will be needed as I obtain more records in the near future. And I will always be on the lookout for Parish Records to transcribe! Thank you all so much - you're all great people on these lists! Lesley
Hi All Maybe some of you out there could point my thinking in the right direction. My grandmother was born in 1883 her name was Minnie Jane Dudley. Her father was John Dudley Simms. Her mother Mary Ann Simms. On John and Mary's marriage certificate he goes as John Dudley Simms, his father Edwayd Dudley married an Ann Simms so he seems to have taken on the Simms surname. So my gran is Minnie Jane Dudley (surname) Simms. When she marries she is just known as Minnie Jane Dudley on the marriage certificate father John Dudley (no Simms mentioned). Could the surname have been dropped just like that, she is born Simms and nothing is mentioned on the marriage certificate. Or is there a reason out there for the dropping of it. Thanks in anticipation. Paul _________________________________________________________________ We want to hear all your funny, exciting and crazy Hotmail stories. Subject: re Volunteers to transcribe Staffordshire Parish Records Many, many thanks to everyone who replied to my email. Hello Listers I've just become the CoOrdinator for the county of Staffordshire on FreeReg and am writing to ask whether any of you would like to consider becoming part of the team, helping to transcribeStaffordshire parish records I've only just started this voluntary post but want to get together a list of people interested so that when everything makes sense to me Staffs will be off and running! I can then get together the training over the internet for you. As you all know, in order to find out information about our families we need records to have been transcribed by someone in the first place, so we are looking for volunteer transcribers to undertake transcriptions of registers. The only requirement is a good eye for reading handwriting (but many of the records are already in printed books), patience and some very basic skills with a computer. It is a function that can be performed anywhere in the world, and you spend asmuch or as little time as you want on it - an hour a month, a week or more, totally up to you. You won't be left on your own, but will have my help and support always. Full training will be given and you'll do 'practice runs' until you - and I - feel that you are fullycompetent. If you're interested - and I'd love you to join! have a look at the home page of FreeReg which gives great information on how it was formed, its aims, etc. I love transcribing for FreeReg and am fully committed to their objective to provide free Internet searches of baptism, marriage, and burial records, which have been extracted from parish registers and non-conformist church records in the UK. Itsan incredibly important project. http://www.freereg.org.uk/ (You'll see a section saying 'how to volunteer'. Please ignore the advice on this as its currently in the process of being updated, ie my name hasntbeen added yet, so please reply to me at this email address. Thanks) Any questions please dont hesitate to reply to this off list And if anyone out there has free access to any parish records for the county PLEASE let me know! I'm in the process of gathering records andall would be received with many, many thanks! I've put this email in a couple of other lists also, so sorry if you come across it again Lesley (Hampton). Could anyone please look up a birth and /or Parents for Susannah Fennell, born about 1811. She married Thomas Bromley in 1833 at St Thomas Dudley. After they married they lived in Kingswinford so I am assuming that she came from there. Many thanks Sandra Harper
Hiya Cass. Go to www.google.co.uk and search the U.K. pages only, type in "canal boat hire Dudley" or Wolverhampton or whatever town you fancy starting from and you'll find more websites than you can shake a stick at. (well almost) I hear these people are very good, http://www.narrowboats.co.uk/ they operate just outside of Wolves at Penkridge on the Stafford Road. Turn right in the village centre by the island and you'll come to their yard. Watch out for them "water rots" they'm as big as cats :0))) Kind regards Ron O'Neill www.genealogyprinters.com
