    3. I have just return from a weekend visit to the battlefields of the Somme and Ypres. On Sunday evening I went to the Menin Gate (The Memorial to the Missing) to the ceremony called the 'Last Post'. It was a wonderful experience so very very moving. During my trip I also visited the Commonwealth Cemetery at Tyne Cot , the Franco-British Memorial at Thiepval, The South African National Memorial at Delville Wood, The Newfoundland Memorial and The Canadian National Memorial. I find it very hard to put into words the sadness I felt when I was told that on the 1 July 1916 in the battle for Thiepval 20,000 men were killed. It was the greatest tragedy in British military history. I did not loose any close relatives in the1st World War. However I am very proud to say that my husbands Grandfather who was in the Machine Gun Corps won the Croix de Guerre which is the highest French medal. To all the men who fought and gave their lives in both the 1st and 2nd World Wars I would like to say Remembered Never Forgotten Denise
